Golden Eagles Open Tourney With Win Over Broncos

POMONA -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team made sure the third time was the charm against Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles opened up a 2-0 lead and then held off the Broncos, 2-1, Tuesday night in a first-round game of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament. Cal State LA, seeded No. 6 (10-5-3) advances to the tournament semi-finals on Friday against No. 2 seed Sonoma State at Stanislaus State.

The Golden Eagles, who were 0-1-1 against the Broncos (12-5-2) during the regular season, believed they deserved a better result when they fell 1-0 to Cal Poly Pomona in Los Angeles two weeks ago. On Tuesday, Cal State LA started quickly and did a tremendous job of holding off the Broncos down the stretch to get a hard-earned and long-awaited victory.

Cal State LA set the tone in the opening stages of the game and took the lead just 2:39 into the game. Tim Eiben started the scoring sequence with a ball into the box, where Hakon Laugsand headed the ball over toward Jonathan Hinojosa, who leaped up and headed the ball into the net for his third goal of the season.

The Golden Eagles continued to control play in the opening half and kept the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Cal State LA then made it 2-0 in the 68th minute thanks to a brilliant strike from Shahin Hemat. He was set up by Ryan Arkelian and then settled the ball and fired a hard shot past Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Jason Trejos and into the net for his fourth goal of the season.

The Broncos, though, made things interesting and cut the margin in half in the 71st minute when Sergi Monso got a deflection off a header and fired a shot inside the far post.

Cal Poly Pomona continued to pressure over the next several minutes, but goalkeeper Steven Barrera and the Cal State LA defense stood tall. Barrera made a couple of brilliant, diving saves and the Golden Eagles weathered the storm and settled the game down for the final 10 minutes.

Cal Poly Pomona ended up with a 21-11 edge in shots, including a 13-5 advantage in the second half. Many of those shots, though, were blocked by an active Cal State LA defense. Ihsan Kalkan, Antonio Rosas, Adrian Diaz, Eiben, Samuel Croucher and Tim Klefisch made things difficult for the Cal Poly Pomona offense. Steven Eberle had a team-high four shots, while Hemat finished with two.

Next up for the Golden Eagles is a rematch with Sonoma State, who scored a 3-2 overtime win over Cal State LA on Saturday.
