Golden Eagles Win Fourth Straight With A Sweep

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team won its fourth straight match Saturday night with a three-set sweep over San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles started quickly and never looked back in a 25-17, 25-19, 25-22 win over the Gators in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match. Cal State LA (9-5, 5-1 CCAA) won for the fifth time in six conference matches and kept the Gators (1-12, 0-5 CCAA) winless in CCAA play.

Alma Serna, who earned AVCA National Player of the Week honors for her performances last week in wins over Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino, had 11 kills and five blocks to lead the Golden Eagles. JamieAnn Bero and Sifa Faaiu had eight kills each, while Taylor Kushner and Lauren Gomez had seven kills each in an efficient Cal State LA attack.

The Golden Eagles hit .356 in the match. Kelsey Molnar had 31 set assists, eight digs, two kills and one ace.

Cal State LA had a 43-37 advantage in kills and San Francisco State had a 6-5 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles had six service aces and six service errors, while the Gators had three aces and eight service errors.

The Golden Eagles built early leads in all three sets. Cal State LA had a quick 12-6 lead in the first set and took a 19-13 lead following a kill by Gomez. Back-to-back kills by Faaiu and a kill by Bero made it 23-16 and the Golden Eagles closed out the set after back-to-back attack errors by the Gators.

The second set was tied at 8-8 before a kill by Serna, an ace by Gomez, a block by Serna and Molnar and a kill by Serna was part of a 7-1 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 15-9 lead. San Francisco State battled back to within 18-15, but a kill by Kushner and back-to-back kills by Serna made it 21-15. A Bero kill finished the set.

Cal State LA took a 19-14 lead in the third set, but San Francisco State got to within 21-20 in a bid to extend the match. A kill by Kushner and an ace by Gomez made it 22-19. San Francisco State closed to within 23-22 before kills by Molnar and Serna ended the match.

Cal State LA will now return home for its next three matches, beginning with a match against Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday at 7 p.m.
