LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's volleyball team kept things rolling at home Friday night with a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles took control early and posted a 25-20, 25-16, 25-20 victory over the Otters. Cal State LA (10-5, 6-1 CCAA) won its fifth straight match and is now 9-2 over its last 11 matches. Cal State Monterey Bay (7-7, 2-5 CCAA) dropped its third straight match.
Lauren Gomez had an outstanding match for the Golden Eagles, collecting 14 kills in just 19 swings for a hitting percentage of .684.
Taylor Kushner had 10 kills, seven digs and two blocks, while
JamieAnn Bero had nine kills and a hitting percentage of .471.
Sam Brennan had a team-high six kills for Cal State Monterey Bay.
Kelsey Molnar also had an outstanding match for the Golden Eagles, recording 43 set assists to go with eight digs and four kills.
Sifa Faaiu had eight kills and four digs, while
Erie Williams had five kills and three blocks.
Chloe Clancy had a match-high 20 digs for Cal State LA.
Cal State LA had a 50-29 edge in kills and hit at a .350 percentage to just .126 for the Otters. The Otters had a 5-4 edge in blocks and had three service aces to none for the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles pulled away late in a close opening set. Cal State LA never trailed, but led just 19-16 before back-to-back kills from Molnar pushed the lead to 21-16. The Otters pulled to within 22-19, but a block by Williams and Kushner and an attack error got the Golden Eagles to set point. A kill by Kushner finished the set.
Cal State LA opened up a 19-11 lead in the second set behind some strong serving by Faaiu. A kill by Bero got the Golden Eagles to 23-16, a ball-handling error made it 24-16 and a kill by Faaiu gave the Golden Eagles the second set.
The third set was tied at 10-10 before a kill by Kushner and a block by Gomez and Bero gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A kill by Kushner gave the Golden Eagles a 21-15 lead and they kept a safe lead the rest of the way. A kill by Bero got the Golden Eagles to match point and a kill by Bero ended the match.
Cal State LA will host Cal State East Bay in another conference match on Saturday at 7 p.m.
