LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team gave conference power UC San Diego all it could handle before fading late in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles tied the game in the opening minute of the fourth quarter before UC San Diego pulled away for a 65-55 win on Saturday. Cal State LA (3-10, 1-6 CCAA) was unable to sustain its push and UC San Diego (12-2, 7-1 CCAA) responded with 10 straight points to regain control and post the victory.
Bree Parsons had 16 points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Franeka Hall had 11 points and six rebounds.
Kiah Knox and
Rikke Fabricius had nine points each and
Christine Delapina had seven points, two rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Beth Mounier and Farrah Shokoor had 12 points each for the Tritons, while Jamie Katuna had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Mounier hit a pair of clutch 3-pointers to fuel the game-breaking 10-0 run for UC San Diego.
Cal State LA shot 38.5 percent (20-of-52) for the game, while UC San Diego shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51). The Tritons were 9-of-20 from 3-point range, while the Golden Eagles were 6-of-18. Cal State LA was 9-of-14 from the free-throw line and UC San Diego was 8-of-13. UC San Diego had a 33-29 rebounding edge and committed only 13 turnovers to 17 for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA surrendered the first six points of the game and never led, but the Golden Eagles were able to stay within striking distance until the late stages of the game. Delapina got the Golden Eagles started with a 3-pointer and Knox got a quick basket to get Cal State LA back in the game.
A 3-pointer by Parsons tied it for the first time at 11-11 before UC San Diego pulled away for a 19-12 lead after one quarter.
Cal State LA trailed by as many as 12 points in the second quarter before a basket by Knox and a 3-pointer by
Ali Orlich made it 30-23 at halftime.
Cal State LA had its best period in the third quarter and outscored the Tritons 14-9 to pull to within 39-37 by the end of the period. A layup by Hall just before the buzzer cut the lead to two.
Hall then tied it with a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter, but UC San Diego scored the next 10 points and led by at least seven points the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona.
