Golden Eagles Turn The Tables On Broncos

LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's basketball team enjoyed a big reversal Friday night against California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent Cal Poly Pomona.

 

The Golden Eagles lost to the Broncos by 37 points in the conference opener for both schools in December, but turned the tables with a big 74-61 win in the Eagles Nest. Cal State LA (4-10, 2-6 CCAA) snapped a six-game losing streak with a gritty performance on Friday.

 

Bree Parsons had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead a balanced scoring attack that saw four Golden Eagles reach double figures in scoring. Ali Orlich had 13 points, Rikke Fabricius had 12 points and Christine Delapina had 10 points and seven assists.

 

Jordyn Shane had 18 points for Cal Poly Pomona (5-11, 3-6 CCAA), while Marshanique Hall and Priscilla Brooks had 12 points each.

 

The Golden Eagles also got eight points and seven rebounds from Franeka Hall and seven points and six rebounds from Kiah Knox.

 

Cal State LA shot 51.1 percent for the game (24-of-47) and was outstanding from 3-point range, knocking down 10-of-21. The Golden Eagles were also 16-of-22 from the free-throw line.

 

Cal Poly Pomona shot just 36.5 percent (19-of-52) and made only 2-of-8 from 3-point range. The Broncos were 21-of-30 from the free-throw line.


The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 34-29 rebounding edge and committed 22 turnovers to 18 for the Broncos.

 

Cal State LA broke the game open in the third quarter and built leads as large as 20 points. Cal Poly Pomona made a run in the fourth quarter to cut the margin to seven points, but couldn't get any closer.

 

The Golden Eagles took a quick 6-0 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers from Parsons and took a four-point lead, 19-15, into the second quarter after a 3-pointer by Hall.

 

After Cal Poly Pomona trimmed the lead to three points late in the second quarter, the Golden Eagles got a 3-pointer by Orlich, a layup by Orlich and a layup by Geena Greene to take a 41-31 halftime lead.

 

Cal State LA then opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run – making it a total of 16 straight points from the end of the first half to the start of the second – to take a 49-31 lead. A steal and layup started the run and 3-pointers by Orlich and Parsons made it 49-31. Cal State LA took its biggest lead at 57-37 after a 3-pointer by Orlich with 1:58 to go in the period.

 

Cal Poly Pomona got as close as 66-59 with 2:28 to go, but Delapina hit a pair of free throws, Fabricius made a layup and Delapina and Hall made a pair of free throws each to make it 74-59 in the final minute.

 

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Humboldt State.
