LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's basketball team came out on the wrong end of a thrilling finish Friday night in the Eagles Nest.
The Golden Eagles battled back to tie conference-leading Cal State East Bay in the final minute, only to see the Pioneers get a game-winning shot with 11 seconds to go to take a 65-63 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory. Cal State LA called a timeout and Kiah Knox had a potential game-tying shot roll all around the rim before falling out and Franeka Hall's tip-in attempt wouldn't fall at the buzzer.
Cal State LA had rallied from a 63-59 deficit in the final 40 seconds thanks to a layup by Knox and a tying jumper from Christine Delapina following a steal and assist by Hall with 14 seconds remaining. That set the stage for Cal State East Bay's Shannon Bland, who hit a jumper in the lane for what proved to be the winning basket.
Bree Parsons had a big game for the Golden Eagles, pouring in 20 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals. Knox had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Hall had 10 points and six rebounds.
Bland had 20 points to lead Cal State East Bay (13-2, 7-0 CCAA), which stretched its winning streak to 11 games with the win. Tori Breshers had 14 points and five rebounds.
Cal State LA made just 33.9 percent of its shots (19-of-56), but did knock down 6-of-14 from 3-point range. Parsons was 4-of-5, while Hall hit the other two. Cal State East Bay shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) and was 5-of-19 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 19-of-25 from the free-throw line, while Cal State East Bay was 10-of-18.
Cal State East Bay had a 35-34 rebounding edge. The Pioneers committed 23 turnovers to 19 for the Golden Eagles.
Fabricius had nine point and two rebounds for Cal State LA, while Chiara DiMarco had eight points and three assists.
The game was tightly-contested throughout and neither team managed a lead larger than nine points. Cal State East Bay's largest lead was nine points, while Cal State LA's was two points.
The Golden Eagles trailed at halftime, 35-28, and then climbed back into the contest in the third period. After Cal State East Bay equaled its largest lead at 37-28 in the first minute of the third quarter, Cal State LA chipped away and eventually tied the game at 41-41 following a layup by Parsons with 1:05 remaining. A pair of free throws by Parsons tied it again at 43-43 and a layup by Knox kept the Golden Eagles within 46-45 heading into the fourth period.
The Golden Eagles fell behind once again by nine points at 57-48 with four minutes to play, but a pair of free throws by Rikke Fabricius and 3-pointers by Parsons and Hall made it 57-56 with 2:34 remaining. Ashley Anderson responded with a 3-pointer for Cal State East Bay, but a free throw by Delapina and a pair of free throws by Fabricius made it a one-point game again at 60-59.
After Cal State East Bay's Laci Effenberger hit a 3-pointer to make it 63-59 with 40 seconds to go, Cal State LA tied it, only to fall short thanks to an unkind rim.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against UC San Diego at 5:30 p.m.
