Golden Eagles Close Out Weekend With Big Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team put the finishing touches on a successful weekend with a big win over San Francisco State Saturday night.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to leads as large as 16 points and posted a 66-57 win over San Francisco State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest. Cal State LA (6-13, 4-9 CCAA) moved into a tie for ninth place in the conference with Cal State Monterey Bay and closed to within one-half game of eighth-place Chico State. The top eight teams will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Franeka Hall had her best game of the season with an outstanding performance. She had a career-high 26 points on 8-of-14 shooting and also contributed six rebounds and five steals in 33 sensational minutes. She hit 5-of-8 from 3-point range and also made 5-of-8 from the free-throw line. She had 14 points in the second quarter while helping the Golden Eagles to a 38-28 halftime lead.

Kiah Knox had nine points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals, while Rikke Fabricius had nine points and three rebounds. Ali Orlich hit a pair of big 3-pointers and finished with six points, three rebounds and three assists.

Tatsiana Dashkevich had a team-high 16 points for San Francisco State (5-14, 3-10 CCAA), while Laura Lawson had a big 15-point, 13-rebound double-double for the Gators.

Cal State LA shot 38.6 percent for the game (22-of-57) and made 9-of-24 from 3-point range. Hall hit five 3-pointers to lead the way, while Orlich and Samantha Lee had two each. The Golden Eagles were 13-of-22 from the free-throw line. San Francisco State shot 38.2 percent overall (21-of-55) and made only 3-of-10 from 3-point range. The Gators were 12-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 42-32, but forced 22 turnovers while committing 13. The Golden Eagles had 15 steals in the contest.

The Golden Eagles trailed early, 9-6, but went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good. Bree Parsons scored consecutive baskets to start the run, which also included a three-point play by Fabricius and a 3-pointer by Hall. The Golden Eagles took a 16-11 lead into the second quarter.

Cal State LA went on a 10-2 run in the second quarter to extend a 21-15 lead to a 29-15 advantage after a pair of 3-pointers by Hall and a jumper by Knox. Cal State LA took its biggest lead at 38-22 after a pair of free throws by Hall and settled for a 38-28 halftime lead.

San Francisco State pulled to within five points midway through the quarter, but a pair of free throws by Knox, a 3-pointer by Lee and a free throw by Knox pushed the lead back to 47-36. Cal State LA took a 50-40 lead into the fourth quarter following a late 3-pointer by Lee.

The Gators got to within nine points with 5:50 to play, but a baskets by Knox and Hall got the lead back to 59-46 and the Golden Eagles kept double-digit margins until the final seconds.

Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with a Homecoming game against first-place Cal State Dominguez Hills at 5:30 p.m. in the Eagles Nest.
