LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team made sure it was rewarded for its extra effort in an exhilarating California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagles erased a 11-point deficit in the last 3:26 of regulation and closed out the game on an 8-2 run to hand the Toros their first conference loss, 98-92, in overtime, in the Eagles Nest. Cal State LA (7-13, 5-9 CCAA) won its third straight game and moved into eighth place in the CCAA by percentage points over Chico State. The top eight teams will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles and Toros (15-7, 13-1 CCAA) went back-and-forth in a sensational contest that was the most exciting game in the Eagles Nest in quite some time. Cal State LA trailed by as many as 16 points in the second quarter, cut into the margin in the third quarter and then really turned it on in an electrifying fourth quarter. The two teams combined for 61 points in the fourth quarter and then combined for another 34 in the five-minute overtime period.
Franeka Hall had a career-high 31 points in 27 outstanding minutes. She hit 11-of-15 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range. She had 11 points in the final five minutes of the game, including a game-tying 3-pointer with 13 seconds to go that sent the game into overtime. She also contributed five rebounds and five steals.
She was one of five Golden Eagles in double figures.
Rikke Fabricius had 18 points and hit 12-of-13 free-throws.
Christine Delapina had 14 points, five assists and two steals,
Bree Parsons had 13 points, including nine in overtime and
Kiah Knox had 10 points and three rebounds.
Ali Orlich hit four clutch free throws in the final 20 seconds to put the game out of reach.
Monay Lee had an outstanding game for the Toros, pouring in 29 points to go along with six rebounds. Breanne Garcia had 23 points and Imari Brown had 19 points.
Cal State LA shot 45.5 percent for the game (30-of-66) and was even better from distance, hitting 10-of-20 from 3-point range. After shooting just 24.2 percent in the first half, the Golden Eagles shot 63 percent in the second half (17-of-27) and 83.3 percent (5-of-6)Â in overtime. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 49.3 percent for the game (34-of-69) and made half of its 12 tries from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 28-of-31 from the free-throw line (90.3 percent) and hit all nine attempts in overtime. Cal State Dominguez Hills was 18-of-26 from the line.
Cal State LA had a 39-38 rebounding edge and both teams had 21 turnovers.
The two teams were a combined 18-of-31 in the fourth quarter (including 7-of-10 from 3-point range) and 12-of-17 in the overtime period in an absolutely amazing offensive performance.
Cal State Dominguez Hills started well and opened up a 17-8 lead after one quarter. After building up leads as large as 16 points in the second quarter, the Toros led 38-23 at halftime.
Cal State LA, though, climbed back into the game with a spirited effort in the third period and pulled to within 51-44 after three quarters, setting the stage for the incredible fourth-quarter fireworks.
The Golden Eagles opened the period with an 11-1 run, taking their first lead at 53-52 on a 3-pointer by Delapina and extending the advantage to 55-52 after a pair of free throws by Fabricius. The Toros regrouped and used an 11-0 run later in the period to take a 70-59 lead with 3:26 to go.
That's when the Golden Eagles got hot. Delapina started the run with a three-point play. After a basket by Lee, Delapina then hit a 3-pointer to make it 72-65 with 2:49 to go. Brown made a layup to extend the advantage to 74-65 with 2:37 remaining, but Hall scored eight straight points as part of a 10-0 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 75-74 lead. Hall hit a 3-pointer, made a steal and layup and then hit another 3-pointer to cut the margin to 74-73 and a layup by Fabricius put Cal State LA ahead with 1:17 to go.
Lee hit a contested jumper to put the Toros back ahead, 76-75 and two free throws by Garcia gave the Toros a 78-75 lead with 21 seconds to go. After a timeout, the Golden Eagles wisely got the ball to Hall, who hit another 3-pointer with 13 seconds to go to send the game into overtime.
The Toros scored the opening basket of overtime on a layup by Garcia, but Hall converted a three-point play to give the Golden Eagles the lead. A layup by Parsons made it 83-80 and she hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles an 86-82 advantage with 2:45 to go. The Toros tied it three times at 86-86, 88-88 and 90-90, but could never regain the lead. Parsons hit a layup to give the Golden Eagles the lead for good with 39 seconds to go and Orlich hit four straight free throws and Fabricius hit two to put the game away.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State San Marcos.
