Golden Eagles Pick Up CCAA Win Over Seawolves

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team made sure it finished what it started Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Sonoma State.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 29-13 lead at halftime and led by as many as 22 points in the fourth quarter and beat the Seawolves, 63-50, in the Eagles Nest. Cal State LA (5-13, 3-9 CCAA) snapped a three-game losing streak and crept closer to eighth place in the conference. The top eight teams will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.

Rikke Fabricius led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 15 points, four rebounds and six assists, while Christine Delapina had a season-high 13 points and five assists. Franeka Hall played a solid game with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and five steals.

Kylie Kiech had a game-high 16 points for the Seawolves (8-13, 3-9 CCAA) and Jessica Mitz added eight points.

Cal State LA's starting lineup of Bree Parsons, Kiah Knox, Ali Orlich, Fabricius and Delapina outscored Sonoma State's starting five, 47-4.

Cal State LA shot 47.1 percent (24-of-51), while holding Sonoma State to just 35.7 percent (15-of-42). Both teams struggled from 3-point range, with the Golden Eagles making only 4-of-17 and the Seawolves connecting on just 3-of-11. Cal State LA was 11-of-16 from the free-throw line, while Sonoma State was 17-of-33.

Cal State LA had a slim 33-30 rebounding edge and committed 25 turnovers to 27 for Sonoma State.

Cal State LA trailed early, 6-5, but outscored Sonoma State, 24-7 over the remainder of the half. The Golden Eagles took a 10-7 lead after one quarter and then outscored the Seawolves, 19-6, in the second period to take the 29-13 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles never led by less than 12 points in the third quarter and took a 48-27 advantage into the final period.

Cal State LA took its biggest lead, 54-32, after a layup by Hall and maintained that edge at 56-34 after a basket by Samantha Lee with 6:39 to go. Sonoma State, though, battled back and went on a 12-3 run to get within 13 points with 3:19 to go, but Parsons stopped the run with a basket and the Golden Eagles led by at least 11 points the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against San Francisco State at 5:30 p.m.
