LA JOLLA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team gave No. 21 UC San Diego all it could handle Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest before falling victim to a fourth-quarter rally by the home team.
The Golden Eagles had an outstanding third quarter and built a 12-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but UC San Diego took advantage of a huge advantage at the free-throw line and stormed back for a 73-64 win in RIMAC Arena. Cal State LA (4-13, 2-9 CCAA) proved to be a tough matchup with UC San Diego (15-3, 10-2 CCAA), taking fourth-quarter leads in both meetings before the Tritons pulled away late to win both contests.
UC San Diego was 21-of-22 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to just 1-of-3 for Cal State LA. The Tritons outscored the Golden Eagles, 31-13 in the final period.
For the game, UC San Diego was 29-of-31 from the free-throw line, while Cal State LA was 4-of-7.
The Golden Eagles shot 42.6 for the game (26-of-61) and limited the Tritons to 40 percent (20-of-50). The Golden Eagles were 8-of-19 from behind the 3-point arc, while the Tritons were 4-of-19.
UC San Diego held a 39-29 rebounding edge and Cal State LA committed only 14 turnovers to 18 for the Tritons.
Franeka Hall had 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals for the Golden Eagles, while
Rikke Fabricius had 12 points and four rebounds.
Kiah Knox had 11 points and four rebounds and
Bree Parsons had 10 points and five rebounds.
Farrah Shokoor had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead five Tritons in double figures. Jamie Katuna had 16 points and five rebounds, Haley Anderson had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double and Taylor Tanita and Beth Mournier had 10 points each.
Christine Delapina had a season-high 10 assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Sami Oliver and
Ali Orlich had six points each. Oliver was 2-of-2 from 3-point range, while Orlich was 2-of-4 from long distance.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and fell behind 16-4 at the outset. A 7-0 run, though, consisting of a 3-pointer by Hall, a free throw by
Geena Greene and a 3-pointer by Orlich got the Golden Eagles back into the game. A 3-pointer by Oliver cut the deficit to 20-18 to open the second quarter and, after falling behind by nine points, baskets by Greene and Parsons made it 32-27 at halftime.
Cal State LA got rolling in the third quarter and took its first lead at 37-36 on a Parsons basket. Two baskets by Fabricius and another by Parsons pushed the advantage to 43-36 and a 3-pointer by Hall made it 51-42 entering the fourth period.
Knox hit a 3-pointer to give Cal State LA a 54-42 advantage and a basket by Fabricius made it 56-44 with 8:40 remaining. UC San Diego, though, went on a 14-0 run to take the lead. A basket by Fabricius tied it at 58-58 with 2:10 to go, but UC San Diego scored the next seven points to take the lead for good. A 3-pointer by Hall cut the deficit to 65-61 with 45 seconds left and a three-point play by Hall made it 67-64 with 24 seconds left.
UC San Diego, though, hit six straight free throws to end the game and extend the final margin.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Sonoma State.
