SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team played a strong first half, but it wasn't enough against California Collegiate Athletic Association contender Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles held a 34-31 halftime lead and stayed ahead until the midway part of the third quarter before falling to the Coyotes, 70-53, Friday night in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State LA (4-12, 2-8 CCAA) was done in by a 16-4 Cal State San Bernardino run in the third quarter that erased a 41-39 Cal State LA lead and turned it into a 55-45 Cal State San Bernardino advantage.
Rikke Fabricious had 14 points and three rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Bree Parsons had 11 points and
Franeka Hall had 10 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Adriana Brodie had 21 points and eight rebounds to lead Cal State San Bernardino (10-5, 7-4 CCAA), while Sophie Bhasin had 12 points and Bisera Peshkova had 11 points.
Christine Delapina had a team-high six assists to go along with two points and
Kiah Knox had a team-high five rebounds.
The Golden Eagles trailed 15-11 after one quarter, but surged into the lead in the second period. Cal State LA was down 20-14 before a Parsons jumper, a 3-pointer by
Ali Orlich and a layup by Parsons gave the Golden Eagles a 21-20 lead. After the Coyotes scored, the Golden Eagles got a layup by Fabricius and a 3-pointer by
Samantha Lee to take a 26-22 edge. A pair of free throws by
Maria Esbo gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the half, 28-23, and a free throw by Hall gave the Golden Eagles a 34-31 halftime lead.
A three-point play by Fabricius and a later 3-pointer by Fabricius kept the Golden Eagles ahead, 40-37, and a free throw by
Sami Oliver kept the Golden Eagles in front, 41-39. The Coyotes then went on their 16-4 run to take control of the game.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at UC San Diego.
