LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s volleyball team found the road extremely tough Friday night against UC San Diego.
The Golden Eagles never could get untracked and fell in three quick sets to the Tritons, 25-17, 25-12, 25-12, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (10-3, 3-2 CCAA) earned its first national ranking since 2010 at the beginning of the week, but has dropped consecutive matches for the first time this season since then.
UC San Diego (7-5, 3-1 CCAA) had big edges in every statistical category against the Golden Eagles. The Tritons had a 38-22 edge in kills and held the Golden Eagles to a negative hitting percentage of -.019. UC San Diego hit at a .224 clip. Cal State L.A. didn't have a single ace, while the Tritons had eight and the Golden Eagles had four service errors to three for the Tritons. UC San Diego also had a 10-2 advantage in blocks.
Iona Lofrano had a team-high seven kills for the Golden Eagles to go along with 11 digs.
JamieAnn Bero had five kills and one block and
Angela Thurmond had four kills.
Meagan Wright had 12 kills and 12 digs for the Tritons, while Danielle Dahle had 11 kills. Heidi Sierks had 27 set assists, two aces and 15 digs.
Kelsey Molnar had 10 assists and 12 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Chloe Clancy had eight digs.
The Golden Eagles led briefly in the opening set, 7-5, following a block by Bero and Lofrano and a kill by Thurmond tied the score at 11-11. The Tritons, though, then scored the next two points and never looked back.
Cal State L.A. struggled mightily in the second set, falling behind 22-9, and never recovered after seeing the Tritons score seven straight points to turn a 6-6 tie into a 13-6 lead.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a match at Cal State San Bernardino beginning at 7 p.m.
