Golden Eagles Drop Tight Decision At UC San Diego

LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team broke its lengthy scoreless streak but not its frustrating losing streak Monday in a non-conference game against California Collegiate Athletic Association foe UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles got a first-half equalizer by Danielle Telles, but UC San Diego got a game-winning goal in the 76th minute to record a 2-1 victory at Triton Field. Cal State L.A. (0-3-1) remained winless on the season with all three losses coming by one goal.

The Golden Eagles had some encouraging moments on Monday and showed some spark on offense. UC San Diego (4-1) had a 20-13 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. The 13 shots were a season-high for Cal State L.A.

Cal State L.A. continued its disturbing trend of allowing early goals and UC San Diego took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute on a goal by Mary Reilly with an assist by Jamie Benedetto. Reilly accepted a through ball and dribbled around the goalkeeper and shot into an empty net.

The Golden Eagles, though, tied it in the ninth minute on the second goal of the season from Telles. She rifled a shot from the top of the penalty area high into the net to get the Golden Eagles even.

That's how the score remained going into the second half when both teams began to generate some more chances. Cal State L.A. had a golden opportunity in the 62nd minute, but a shot by Veronika Steen hit the crossbar and stayed out.

UC San Diego took a 2-1 lead in the 76th minute when Megumi Barber scored off a cross in the box. Summer Bales and Jordyn McNutt had the assists.

Cal State L.A. had some looks in the waning moments. A shot by Daisy Macias in the 88th minute was saved by Kelcie Brodsky and Selena Cuara delivered a dangerous corner kick in the 89th minute. A final shot by Victoria Arredondo was stopped by Brodsky in the final minute.

Adriana Maldonado made a season-high eight saves in goal for Cal State L.A., while Brodsky made four saves for UC San Diego.

Telles and Steen each had three shots for the Golden Eagles, while Tatiana Zuvic and Macias had two shots each.

Cal State L.A. will open CCAA play at home on Friday against Sonoma State at 4:30 p.m.
