LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got a superlative game from goalkeeper
Adriana Maldonado and battled to a 0-0 draw in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener.
The Golden Eagles had some solid chances as well, but couldn't get a goal and had to settle for a 0-0 tie with Sonoma State on Friday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (0-3-2, 0-0-1 CCAA) played strong defense and kept the Seawolves off the board as well.
Sonoma State had a 27-14 shot advantage, although most of the shots were from distance. When they did get shots on frame, Maldonado was there to stop them. The redshirt freshman made a season-high 12 saves for the shutout.
Sonoma State goalkeeper Ashley Luis was also strong and made eight saves. She made her best save of the night in the first half when she made a diving deflection of a header by
Selena Cuara and kept the ball from crossing the goal-line. Cuara's shot was a brilliant one and Luis did everything she could to keep the ball out of the goal.
Sonoma State's best chance also came in the first half when, with Maldonado out, Margi Osmundson sent a shot that rolled just wide of the far post.
Veronika Steen had a solid game and took a team-high four shots, three of which were on goal. Cuara and
Danielle Telles had two shots each.
Sara Van Wagoner had six shots for the Seawolves (2-1-2, 0-0-1), while Belia Amyx had five.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a conference game against Humboldt State at 11:30 a.m.
