LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team saw its offensive struggles continue Sunday and a late miscue cost the Golden Eagles dearly.
The Golden Eagles surrendered the ball deep in their own zone and it led to the only goal of the game in a 1-0 loss to Humboldt State Sunday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (0-4-2, 0-1-1 CCAA) had a sizeable advantage in shots, but Humboldt State (5-2, 2-0 CCAA) made the most of a big opportunity that presented itself in the second half.
After a steal, Samantha Morris was set up close by Jacquelyn Dompier and she hit a shot that bounced off the crossbar and just over the goal-line in the 74
th minute for the only goal of the game.
Cal State L.A. had a 17-3 edge in shots and an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks, but could not get one past Humboldt State goalkeeper Caitlin Plese. She made eight saves for the shutout.
Adriana Maldonado made two saves for the Golden Eagles.
Veronika Steen had a match-high six shots, including three on goal, while
Anahie Duran had three shots and
Selena Cuara and
Jackeline Lopez had two shots each.
Three of the four Golden Eagle losses have been by 1-0 scores and the other was a 2-1 defeat.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino that will begin at 4:30 p.m.
