Golden Eagles Finish Season With A Saturday Win

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team made sure its final weekend would be a winning one.
 
The Golden Eagles finished the 2014-15 season in style, racing past Sonoma State, 67-39, Saturday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (11-15, 10-12 CCAA) won its final two games to secure seventh place in the CCAA.
 
Chiara DiMarco had 13 points and three assists to lead the way, while Aiwekhoe Okungbowa had 12 points and seven rebounds. Kiara Harewood had a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with five points.
 
Madison Burroughs led Sonoma State (6-20, 4-18 CCAA) with 12 points.
 
Cal State L.A. shot just 39.3 percent (24-of-61), but limited Sonoma State to just 26.6 percent shooting (17-of-64). The Golden Eagles were 8-of-28 from 3-point range, while the Seawolves were just 2-of-20. Cal State L.A. was also 11-of-17 from the free-throw line, while Sonoma State was just 3-of-11.
 
The Golden Eagles rebounded well for a second straight evening, enjoying a 57-36 advantage. The Golden Eagles committed 21 turnovers to 19 for the Seawolves.
 
For the second straight evening, Cal State L.A. started quickly and led from start to finish. A 3-pointer by DiMarco gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead of the game, 27-17, with 3:47 to go in the half and the Golden Eagles took a 12-point halftime lead at 33-21 after a layup by Ali Orlich and a pair of free throws by Okungbowa.
 
Harewood opened the second half with a layup and a free throw 13 seconds later to give the Golden Eagles a 36-21 lead. Cal State L.A. led by at least 11 points the rest of the way.
 
Bree Parsons had seven points and nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Kaija Powell had seven points, three rebounds and three assists.
 
Cal State L.A. honored its two seniors – Kiara Harewood and Aiwekhoe Okungbowa – in pregame ceremonies.
