LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team didn't have its best offensive night, but another solid defensive effort was enough to secure a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles shot just 37 percent, but held Cal State East Bay to just 30.4 percent in a 63-53 victory Friday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-12, 7-10 CCAA) led by as many as 16 points in the first half and kept the Pioneers at arm's length the rest of the way.
Joel Brokenbrough had 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while Joshua Munson had 12 points courtesy of four 3-pointers and
LaBradford Franklin had 10 points. Munson and Franklin combined to go 6-of-12 from 3-point range.
Nick Grieves hit six 3-pointers in 12 tries and led Cal State East Bay (5-18, 3-14 CCAA) with 18 points. Jacari Whitfield had 12 points and five rebounds.
David Hall had a solid game for Cal State L.A. and had nine points and six rebounds, while
Xavier Jones had seven points and six rebounds.
Cal State L.A. shot 46.2 percent in the first half while building a 32-23 halftime lead, but shot just 28.6 percent in the second half. The Golden Eagles finished the game 20-of-54. Cal State East Bay shot just 30.4 percent for the game (17-of-56). Cal State L.A. was 6-of-12 from 3-point range, while Cal State East Bay was 8-of-29. The Golden Eagles were just 17-of-32 from the free-throw line, while the Pioneers were 11-of-12.
Cal State L.A. had a 44-37 rebounding edge and committed only 11 turnovers while forcing 18.
The Golden Eagles trailed early, 6-4, but then went on a 12-0 run to take the lead for good. Brokenbrough made it 6-5 with a free throw and then gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good with a basket. Franklin followed with a 3-pointer,
Andre McPhail added a free throw, Munzon hit a 3-pointers and
Dushon Carter hit a jumper to give the Golden Eagles a 16-6 lead.
After the Pioneers pulled to within eight points, 22-14, the Golden Eagles scored the next eight points to take a 30-14 lead. Jones scored inside to start the run and Munzon and Franklin hit 3-pointers to give the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game. Cal State L.A. settled for a 32-23 halftime lead.
A 3-pointer by Whitfield opened the second half for Cal State East Bay and the Pioneers stayed within six points, 39-33, after a tip-in by Cody Kale with 14 minutes to play. A basket by Brokenbrough, a three-point play by
David Hall and a 3-pointer by Munzon boosted the lead back to 14 points, 47-33, with 10:51 to go.
The Golden Eagles kept their advantage, although a late surge by the Pioneers brought them to within 54-49 with 2:22 to go. Brokenbrough, though, made a layup and then hit two free throws to make it 58-49 with 1:01 to go and the Golden Eagles maintained a safe margin the rest of the way.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a home game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
