POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team certainly didn't get off to the start it wanted to in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
The Golden Eagles opened conference action with a disappointing 82-45 loss to Cal Poly Pomona Wednesday night in Kellogg Gym. Cal State LA (2-4, 0-1 CCAA) shot just 25 percent and never could get untracked. The Golden Eagles were coming off an impressive win over previously unbeaten Point Loma on Saturday, but they were unable to duplicate that effort on Wednesday.
Kiah Knox had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Chiara DiMarco had 10 points.
Jordyn Shane had 23 points, while Mary Williams had 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead Cal Poly Pomona (3-4, 1-0 CCAA).
Cal State LA connected on just 15-of-59 field-attempts and was just 4-of-20 from 3-point range. Cal Poly Pomona, on the other hand, shot much better, making 33-of-64 (51.6 percent) from the field, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range.
The Golden Eagles were outrebounded, 49-32, and committed 18 turnovers to 16 for the Broncos.
Sami Oliver and
Rikke Fabricius had four points each for the Golden Eagles.
Ali Orlich had six rebounds.
The Golden Eagles never led and were only tied twice, once at 3-3 after a 3-pointer by Orlich and again at 5-5 after a pair of free throws by DiMarco. Cal State LA, though, managed only seven points the rest of the quarter and trailed 23-12 after the first period. The Golden Eagles trailed at halftime, 44-30, after a late basket by Knox, but Cal State LA managed only 15 points in the second half as the Broncos pulled away.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Humboldt State.
