ARCATA -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team saw its performance take a huge leap forward Saturday and it resulted in the Golden Eagles' first conference win of the season.
Just three days after scoring a season-low 45 points, the Golden Eagles equalled a season high in an 88-74 win over defending conference champion Humboldt State in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State LA (3-4, 1-1 CCAA) built a 19-point lead after three quarters and maintained a double-digit margin for the entire fourth quarter.
Chiara DiMarco had a monster game for the Golden Eagles, scoring a career-high 29 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures. She had three 3-pointers among her seven field goals and was 12-of-15 from the free-throw line. Her previous career high was 21 points on Jan. 23, 2015 at Sonoma State.
Rikke Fabricius also had an outstanding game with 15 points and eight rebounds, while
Bree Parsons had 16 points and four rebounds on 8-of-10 shooting.
Ali Orlich also reached double figures with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists, while
Franeka Hall had 12 points and a pair of steals that helped fuel a game-breaking run at the end of the third quarter.
Amanda Kunst led all scorers with 30 points. She was 10-of-17 from the floor and 6-of-10 from 3-point range, but the Golden Eagles held the rest of the team to 11-of-48 shooting, including just 2-of-16 from 3-point range.
Cal State LA shot 51.7 percent (31-of-60), including 6-of-18 from 3-point range. Humboldt State (3-5, 1-1 CCAA) shot just 30.8 percent overall (21-of-65) and 8-of-26 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 20-of-32 from the free-throw line, while the 'Jacks were 24-of-26.
Cal State LA had a slim 40-39 rebounding edge and committed 15 turnovers to 12 for the 'Jacks.
The Golden Eagles got off to a solid start and scored the first six points of the game. After Humboldt State took a brief 12-10 lead, the Golden Eagles scored six straight points - two by DiMarco to tie it and four straight from Parsons - to take the lead for good. The Golden Eagles led 21-17 after the first quarter and built leads as large as 13 points in the second quarter before settling for a 44-38 halftime lead.
Humboldt State closed to within two points early in the fourth quarter, but a free throw by
Kiah Knox and a layup by Fabricius boosted the lead back to five points.
Cal State LA held just a six-point lead, but closed the quarter with a 13-0 run to put the game out of reach. A 3-pointer by DiMarco started the run, which included two free throws by DiMarco, a layup by Parsons, a steal and layup by Hall, a steal by Hall that led to a layup by Orlich and ended with an offensive rebound by Hall that gave the Golden Eagles a 68-49 lead at the end of the period.
Cal State LA never led by less than 11 points in the final quarter.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 16 with a home game against Central Washington at 7 p.m.
