RIVERSIDE – Cal State LA's women's basketball team's second game at the California Baptist Thanksgiving Tournament went decidedly better than its first.
The Golden Eagles rebounded nicely from a disappointing loss on Friday to California Baptist and handed previously unbeaten Point Loma its first loss of the season, 60-44, Saturday in Van Dyne Gym. Rebound was a key word as Cal State LA (2-3) outrebounded Point Loma (5-1), 51-31, and limited the Sea Lions to just 22 percent shooting.
Bree Parsons had a tremendous game for the Golden Eagles with a career-high 18 points and 16 rebounds. It was her first career double-double and Parsons blew past her previous best of 10 rebounds.
Chiara DiMarco had 16 points and came up big for the Golden Eagles down the stretch and
Rikke Fabricius had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Kiah Knox also had a strong game with eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
Madison West had 14 points to lead Point Loma, which was 3-0 against CCAA competition entering Saturday's game.
Cal State LA shot 40.4 percent for the game (21-of-52) despite making only 4-of-18 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were also an efficient 14-of-18 from the free-throw line. Point Loma was just 13-of-59 and 5-of-27 from 3-point range. The Sea Lions were 13-of-19 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles committed 20 turnovers to only 10 for the Sea Lions, but were unable to overcome their miscues.
Cal State LA led nearly from start to finish and closed the game out well in the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles led 11-5 after one quarter, 28-18 at halftime and 39-32 after three quarters.
Point Loma held a 5-3 lead three minutes into the game, but a 3-pointer by Parsons gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Three free throws in four attempts by Fabricius and a basket by Parsons gave the Golden Eagles an 11-5 lead by the end of the period.
That lead grew to double figures after a layup by Parsons and a 3-pointer by DiMarco made it 16-5 early in the second period. Cal State LA took its biggest lead of the half after a layup by DiMarco made it 22-10. Point Loma sliced the deficit to eight points, but a layup by Knox gave the Golden Eagles a 28-18 halftime lead.
Point Loma got the lead down to five points four times in the third quarter, but Cal State LA responded each time and used a basket by Parsons to take a 39-32 lead into the fourth quarter.
Point Loma got to within four points, 43-39, with 6:12 to go, but Parsons hit a free throw and Fabricius made two to extend the lead. After a free throw by Point Loma's Stephanie Williams made it 46-40 with five minutes to go, DiMarco hit a 3-pointer to boost the lead to nine points with 3:43 remaining. Point Loma never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Wednesday at Cal Poly Pomona.
