Golden Eagles Win In Four Sets At CS East Bay

HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team bounced back from its loss on Friday in San Francisco with a better team performance on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles started strongly and didn't let a wobble in the third set derail them in a 25-20, 25-22, 20-25, 25-22 victory over Cal State East Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in Pioneer Gym. Cal State L.A. (12-5, 5-4 CCAA) earned a split of its weekend matches in Northern California and finished with a 2-1 record on the week. The Golden Eagles opened the week with a home win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday.

Iona Lofrano led the way with 18 kills, 16 digs and three blocks, while JamieAnn Bero had a strong match with 14 kills in 23 swings for a .565 percentage and three blocks. Taylor Kusher had 12 kills and Lexi Resch contributed four kills, 10 digs and two blocks.

Kiki Leutenkeker had 12 kills to lead Cal State East Bay (3-12, 1-6 CCAA), while Deja Thompson and Darlene Lee had 10 kills each.

Kelsey Molnar had 43 set assists and 10 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Chloe Clancy had a team-high 19 digs.

The Golden Eagles had a slim 57-56 edge in kills, but hit .215 to .248 for the Pioneers. The two teams tied in blocks at 8-8 and service aces at 6-6.

The Golden Eagles got back-to-back aces from Lauren Gomez as part of a run that opened up a 13-8 lead in the opening set. The Pioneers got as close as 16-15, but a kill by Angela Thurmond, an attack error and a kill by Bero bumped the lead back up to 19-15. A Lofrano kill made it 23-19 and the Golden Eagles closed out the set thanks to a pair of Cal State East Bay attack errors.

The Golden Eagles trailed early in the second set, 10-7, but a block by Thurmond and Lofrano, a solo block by Thurmond, a block by Thurmond and Resch and a kill by Kushner put the Golden Eagles ahead, 11-10. After the Pioneers tied it at 13-13, a kill by Bero, two attack errors, a block by Resch and Bero and a kill by Molnar fueled a 5-0 run and Cal State L.A. eventually closed out the set on a kill by Thurmond.

After dropping the third set, the Golden Eagles overcame a stern challenge to close the match out in the fourth. After the score was tied at 18-18, a service error and a kill by Bero gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A service error, a kill by Gomez and an ace by Bero gave the Golden Eagles a 24-20 lead and, after Cal State East Bay saved the first two match points, a kill by Mia Alcaraz ended the contest.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Saturday, Oct. 10, with a home match against Cal State San Marcos.
