Golden Eagles Come Up Big Late For CCAA Win

SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team had another wild ride Friday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Cal State Monterey Bay and this time the Golden Eagles enjoyed the end.

LaBradford Franklin hit a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute and the Golden Eagles went on to a 61-56 win over the Otters. Cal State L.A. (5-6, 3-4 CCAA) snapped a two-game losing streak with the important road victory.

Cal State L.A. raced out to a 16-2 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, fell behind by six points with five minutes to play and then battled back to post the victory.

Franklin finished with a team-high 17 points, while Joshua Munzon had 16 points. Andre McPhail added nine points and six rebounds.

Even Zeller had a game-high 24 points for the Otters (7-6, 3-4 CCAA), while Alex Fertig had nine points.

After falling behind by six points, the Golden Eagles tied the game at 46-46 after a 3-pointer by Munzon and a pair of free throws by Franklin. Munzon tied the game again at 48-48 and then again at 51-51 after answering Fertig's 3-pointer with a 3-pointer of his own with 1:11 to play. Franklin then hit a 3-pointer with 42 seconds to play to put the Golden Eagles ahead for good, 54-51.

After Cal State Monterey Bay sliced the lead to 54-53, Franklin hit one free throw to push the lead to 55-53. After a defensive stop, Chris Martin hit two clutch free throws to give the Golden Eagles a 57-53 advantage with 14 seconds to play. Zeller hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds to go to make it 57-56, but Franklin calmly hit two free throws to extend the lead to 59-56.

Dushon Carter then fouled Zeller before he had a chance to attempt a 3-pointer and, after the Otters' leading scorer missed both free throws, Joel Brokenbrough grabbed the rebound, was fouled and hit both free throws to account for the final margin.

Cal State L.A. shot 35.9 percent (19-of-53), while Cal State Monterey Bay shot 38.5 percent (20-of-52). The Golden Eagles were 6-of-17 from 3-point range (35.3 percent), while the Otters were 5-of-13 (38.5 percent). The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 40-35, but committed only 14 turnovers to 20 for the Otters.

Cal State L.A. was outstanding out of the gates, jumping to a 16-2 lead. Baskets by McPhail and Munzon and a 3-pointer by Aaron Alston gave the Golden Eagles a 7-0 lead. After the Otters got their first basket five minutes of the game, the Golden Eagles scored the next nine points on a basket by David Hall and seven straight points by Franklin, including a 3-pointer that made it 16-2.

After the Otters sliced the lead to two points, a tip-in by McPhail gave the Golden Eagles a 22-18 halftime lead.

The Otters surged in the second half and took their biggest lead after a Joey Scott three-point play made it 43-37 with 5:38 to go. Brokenbrough hit a pair of free throws and McPhail scored on a layup to start the Golden Eagles on their comeback trail.
