HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team made sure it put the finishing touches on a successful California Collegiate Athletic Association weekend.
The Golden Eagles took control of the game with a strong first half run and went on to post a 62-50 victory over Cal State East Bay Saturday night in Pioneer Gym. Cal State L.A. (6-6, 4-4 CCAA), which beat Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, completed its first weekend sweep of the season.
Joshua Munzon led the Golden Eagles with 14 points, while
Andre McPhail had 11 points and
David Hall had 10 points and five rebounds.
Jack Pasquini had 14 points to lead Cal State East Bay (4-10, 2-6 CCAA), while Juawnn Springfield had 12 points.
LaBradford Franklin had nine points for the Golden Eagles, while
Xavier Jones had eight points.
Cal State L.A. shot 47.6 percent (20-of-42) while holding Cal State East Bay (16-of-49) to just 32.7 percent shooting. The Golden Eagles were 3-of-9 from 3-point range, while the Pioneers were 5-of-24. Cal State L.A. made 19-of-27 free-throw attempts, while Cal State East Bay was 13-of-17.
Cal State L.A. had a 37-27 rebounding edge, while committing 16 turnovers to 15 for the Pioneers.
The Golden Eagles took the lead for good after putting together an 11-0 run that erased a 13-11 deficit. A basket by Jones tied it at 13-13 and a go-ahead basket by Franklin, two free throws by McPhail, a dunk by
Aaron Alston, a free throw by Munzon and two free throws by Hall gave the Golden Eagles a 22-13 lead. A pair of free throws by McPhail gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 26-16 lead. A 3-pointer by Munzon gave the Golden Eagles their biggest first-half lead, 32-18, and Cal State L.A. settled for a 32-22 halftime lead.
Cal State East Bay was able to cut the deficit to 38-34 before a free throw by McPhail and a 3-pointer by Munzon pushed the lead back to eight points. The Pioneers got it back to within six points at 42-36 before a jumper by
Joel Brokenbrough, a layup by Franklin and a dunk by McPhail with an assist from
Chris Martin made it 48-36. A layup by Hall gave the Golden Eagles a 52-40 lead with 7:42 remaining and was their last basket of the game. Two free throws by
Dushon Carter gave the Golden Eagles a 54-40 lead with 6:53 to go and two free throws by McPhail gave Cal State L.A. a 57-46 edge with 3:25 to go.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home game against UC San Diego.
