ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team found itself on the short end of a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Humboldt State in a contest that featured wild swings.
The Golden Eagles found themselves on the short end of 19-4 and 26-4 runs that left them 32 points behind in the second half before a furious rally came up short in an 85-74 loss to the Lumberjacks Saturday in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State L.A. (4-6, 2-4 CCAA) scored 17 straight points to at least give itself a chance, trailing 78-63 with more than four minutes remaining, but Humboldt State managed to keep the Golden Eagles at bay down the stretch.
LaBradford Franklin had 18 points, six rebounds and six assists to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures.
Aaron Alston had 14 points and six rebounds,
Joshua Munzon had 11 points and
Justin Snavely had 10 points and six rebounds.
Malik Morgan and Rakim Brown scored 16 points each for Humboldt State (8-4, 2-4 CCAA), while David Howard and Andrew Cones had 14 points each.
The Golden Eagles shot 45.5 percent for the game (25-of-55), while the 'Jacks shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55). The Golden Eagles were 9-of-21 from 3-point range, while the Lumberjacks were 9-of-23 and the Golden Eagles were 15-of-21 from the free-throw line (71.4 percent) and the Lumberjacks were 22-of-28 (78.6 percent).
Both teams had 31 rebounds and Cal State L.A. committed 15 turnovers to 12 for Humboldt State.
The Golden Eagles started well and took a 25-22 lead after a 3-pointer by Alston with 7:57 remaining in the opening half. A basket by Alston kept the game tied at 27-27 with 6:57 remaining before the Lumberjacks closed the half on a 19-4 run to take a 46-31 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles clawed to within 10 points at 52-42 following a basket by Munzon with 14:44 to go, but Humboldt State then went on a 26-4 run over a 6:30 stretch left the Golden Eagles in a 32-point hole, 78-46, with 8:14 to go.
Cal State L.A. responded by scoring 17 straight points in its best stretch of the game. Snavely scored five straight points and Franklin scored on a layup to get the run started. Munzon hit a pair of free throws, Franklin and Snavely hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Alston scored on a layup to make it 78-63 with 4:08 to play.
The Golden Eagles got two free throws by
Dushon Carter, a free throw by
Chris Martin and a basket by Alston to close to within 81-70, but by then only 1:13 was left. A 3-pointer by Franklin accounted for the final margin.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
