Box Score HILO, HI -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team opened its 2014 season with an important NCAA Division II West Region win in Hawaii.
The Golden Eagles got a first-half goal on a penalty kick by
Amalia Arvidsson and a second-half goal off a corner kick from
Jackeline Lopez and beat Hawaii-Hilo, 2-0, on Thursday night. Cal State L.A. (1-0), with several key returners and a talented group of newcomers, picked up where it left off last season when the Golden Eagles were among the hottest teams in the country.
Cal State L.A. got on the board first thanks to a penalty-kick goal by Arvidsson, who led the Golden Eagles in goals last season. The Golden Eagles maintained the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Golden Eagles added some insurance early in the second half with assists from the Telles sisters. Younger sister
Danielle Telles took the corner kick and
Justine Telles flicked it to Lopez, who knocked it into the goal in her Cal State L.A. debut.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 12-3 advantage in shots and goalkeeper
Yi Du needed to make only one save to post the shutout. The Golden Eagles also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Cal State L.A. will conclude its two-game trip to Hawaii with a match against BYU-Hawaii on Saturday at 6 p.m. PST.
