Box Score SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was able to turn the tables on San Francisco State Saturday night in a key California Collegiate Athletic Association game.
The Golden Eagles, who lost by 23 points to the Gators last month in the Eagles Nest, turned in a much better performance in the rematch and beat the Gators, 67-55, Saturday in The Swamp. Cal State L.A. (14-6, 11-5 CCAA) won its fourth straight game and remained in a tie for second place in the tightly-packed conference standings.
Aiwekhoe Okungbowa had a tremendous game, scoring a season-high 26 points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
Faith Fantroy had 12 points and
Tina Fantroy had eight points.
Samantha Lee had six points on back-to-back 3-pointers that gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good in the first half.
Angela Van Sickel had 17 points for San Francisco State (12-10, 8-8 CCAA), while Katie Batlin had 12 points and eight rebounds and Lauren Varney had 11 points and nine rebounds.
Cal State L.A. shot 43.6 percent for the game (24-of-55) and limited San Francisco State to just 31 percent shooting (18-of-58). The Golden Eagles were just 4-of-19 from 3-point range, while the Gators were 6-of-19. Cal State L.A. was 15-of-24 from the free-throw line, while San Francisco State was 13-of-16.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 43-36 rebounding edge and had 18 turnovers to 19 for the Gators.
Cal State L.A. started a bit slowly and allowed the first five points before falling into their biggest deficit of the game, 16-8, eight minutes into the contest. Cal State L.A., though, turned the game around with a 22-1 run and was never seriously threatened after building a 32-21 halftime lead. The Golden Eagles still trailed, 17-14, before a pair of free throws by Okungbowa and back-to-back 3-pointers from Lee gave the Golden Eagles a 22-17 lead.
Richelle Najera made a basket, Okungbowa hit two free throws,
Paige Melville made a layup and Okungbowa made a layup to give the Golden Eagles a 30-17 edge.
Cal State L.A. opened up its biggest lead of the game at 60-41 after two free throws by
Faith Fantroy with 6:49 to go. San Francisco State scored the next 10 points, including back-to-back 3-pointer by Van Sickel, to pull to within nine, but Okungbowa stopped the run with a layup. The Gators got to within nine points again at 62-53, but
Faith Fantroy hit a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 12 points, 65-53, with 2:42 to play and Cal State L.A. allowed only two more points the rest of the way.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against Chico State.
