Box Score ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team saw a double-digit, second-half lead sliced to a single basket and then turned things over to its defense.
The Golden Eagles blanked Sonoma State over a five-minute stretch late in the game and pulled away for an important 66-54 win over the Seawolves Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Wolves' Den. Cal State L.A. (13-6, 10-5 CCAA) won its third straight game and pulled into a three-way tie for second place in the conference with Cal State Dominguez Hills and Chico State.
Paige Melville had a game-high 16 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Destinee La Fountain was just shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Tina Fantroy and
Alisha Belt had eight points each.
Taylor Acosta had 14 points for the Seawolves (3-16, 2-13 CCAA), while Tanner Adams and Bronte Sheahan had 12 points each and Kristina Fahey had 10 points.
Aiwekhoe Okungbowa and
Kaija Powell added seven points each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. shot 38.7 percent from the floor (23-of-60) and limited Sonoma State to just 31.8 percent shooting (21-of-66). The Golden Eagles were just 2-of-10 from 3-point range, while Sonoma State was 9-of-22. Cal State L.A. was 18-of-28 from the free-throw line, while Sonoma State was 3-of-4.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a big 50-37 rebounding edge and committed only eight turnovers to nine for the Seawolves.
Cal State L.A. led for most of the game. The Golden Eagles trailed early, 7-4, and were down for the final time, 14-12, after a 3-pointer by Adams. Okungbowa tied it with a layup, Fantroy put the Golden Eagles ahead for good with a layup and Okungbowa extended the lead with another basket. The Golden Eagles held a 30-25 lead and then took their biggest lead of the half, 36-25, after a 3-pointer by
Emily Tevez and a three-point play by La Fountain.
The Golden Eagles settled for a 36-27 halftime lead.
Cal State L.A. took its biggest lead of the game, 43-30, after a layup by Melville, but Sonoma State steadily chipped away at the deficit and pulled to within 53-51 after a 3-pointer by Acosta with 6:22 to play. That's when the Golden Eagle defense took over and sparked a game-deciding 10-0 run over the next five minutes.
Richelle Najera scored to make it 55-51 and start the run. Belt followed with a basket, Powell made a layup, La Fountain made a basket and a layup by Melville gave the Golden Eagles a 63-51 lead with just 56 seconds left.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at San Francisco State.
