Golden Eagles See Win Streak Snapped By Warriors

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team ended an opponent's winning streak on Friday only to see its own winning streak come to an end on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles had a five-game streak snapped when Cal State Stanislaus overcame a 13-point halftime deficit and beat Cal State L.A., 73-66, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (15-7, 12-6 CCAA) remains in a second-place tie with Chico State and Cal State Dominguez Hills with four games remaining in the regular season.

Aiwekhoe Okungbowa had another big game with 23 points and a season-high 14 rebounds, while Destinee La Fountain had her second straight double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Paige Melville added 11 points.

Briana Cotton had 19 points for Cal State Stanislaus (12-10, 10-8 CCAA), while Lauren Godde had 17 points and 12 rebounds. Ana Burch had 17 points and five assists, while Riley Holladay had 10 points.

The Golden Eagles went ice cold from the field in the second half and shot just 29 percent. They also missed all six of their 3-point attempts and were only 6-of-11 from the free-throw line. After scoring 42 first-half points, the Golden Eagles managed only 24 points in the second half.

Cal State L.A. wound up shooting 36.8 percent for the game (25-of-68) and was just 1-of-11 from 3-point range. Cal State Stanislaus shot 39.4 percent overall (26-of-66), but was much better from 3-point range (9-of-21) and made 12-of-16 from the free-throw line. Cal State L.A. made only 15-of-24.

The game started off well for the Golden Eagles and they opened up leads as large as 14 points before settling for a 42-29 halftime lead after Melville hit three free throws when she was fouled with one second remaining in the half.

The Warriors wasted little time getting back into the contest after back-to-back 3-pointers from Burch and Cotton to open the second half. The Golden Eagles still held a 60-52 lead with 6:40 to go after a layup by Okungbowa, but Cal State Stanislaus went on a game-changing 13-0 run over the next four minutes, taking the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Cotton with four minutes to go. The Warriors ultimately opened up a nine-point lead and closed the game out with a 21-6 run.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Humboldt State.
