Golden Eagles Drop Second CCAA Game To Toros

CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was unable to avenge its loss last week to Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles scored the first eight points of the game, but the Toros stormed back to take a seven-point lead by halftime and went on to a 69-55 win Wednesday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Torodome. Cal State L.A. (3-5, 2-2 CCAA) lost to Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-4, 4-0 CCAA) for the second time in five days.

Kaija Powell, who had a career-high 23 points against the Toros last week, led the Golden Eagles with 11 points and four rebounds on Wednesday. Bree Parsons had eight points and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. Aiwekhoe Okungbowa had seven points and four rebounds, while Kiah Knox and Franeka Hall had six points each.

Breanne Garcia had 27 points to lead the Toros, hitting 14-of-17 free-throw attempts. Tayler Champion had 13 points and seven rebounds and Talia Rayford had 12 points and six rebounds.

Cal State L.A. shot 39.1 percent (18-of-46) for the game, while Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54). The Golden Eagles were 5-of-14 from behind the 3-point arc, while the Toros were 9-of-24. Cal State L.A. was 14-of-24 from the free-throw line, while the Toros were 18-of-25.

Cal State Dominguez Hills had a big 42-28 rebounding edge and limited the Golden Eagles to only three offensive rebounds. Cal State L.A. had 23 turnovers to 22 for Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start and kept the Toros scoreless for the first six minutes of the game. Powell opened the scoring with a steal and layup three minutes into the game and an offensive rebound and basket by Okungbowa made it 4-0. Powell and Knox hit baskets to give the Golden Eagles an 8-0 lead.

A basket by Chiara DiMarco kept the Golden Eagle lead at seven points at 14-7 and a basket by Knox kept the advantage at 16-9. The Toros, though, went on an 11-0 run to take the lead for good. A three-point play by Powell brought the Golden Eagles to within one point at 20-19, but the Toros went on another run to take a 28-21 halftime lead.

Cal State Dominguez Hills then broke the game open by scoring the first 10 points of the second half to take a 38-21 lead. A 3-pointer by Parsons put the Golden Eagles back on the board, but the Toros responded with another run, this one a 16-6 spurt, to take its biggest lead of the game, 54-30. The Golden Eagles fought back and pulled to within 14 points on a basket by Parsons that made it 63-49, but less than two minutes remained and the Golden Eagles couldn't get any closer.

Cal State L.A. will now be off until a Jan. 1 game at Cal State San Bernardino.
