Golden Eagles Post Sweep Over CS Stanislaus

TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team was able to complete a three-set sweep of Cal State Stanislaus on Friday, but it wasn't easy.

The Golden Eagles had to claw their way to a win in the third set of a 25-20, 25-19, 26-24 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over the Warriors. Cal State L.A. (9-2, 7-1 CCAA) maintained its one-game lead in the CCAA with its fourth straight win.

Loreal Carter had 11 kills for the Golden Eagles, while Iona Lofrano had 10 kills and 11 digs. Kymberly Silveyra had nine kills and 15 digs.

Jocelyn Cervantes had 10 kills for Cal State Stanislaus (1-11, 1-7 CCAA), while Blair Ehrlich had nine kills.

Cal State L.A. had a 40-31 advantage in kills and a 6-0 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles hit at a .202 percentage to .127 for the Warriors.

The Golden Eagles trailed early in the first set, 11-6, but a kill by JamieAnn Bero, a kill by Silveyra and a block by Alcaraz and Silveyra got the Golden Eagles back into the set. The set was tied at 20-20 before Cal State L.A. scored five straight points on two attack errors, a Silveyra kill, an ace by Bero and another attack error.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 18-11 lead in the second set after a Carter kill, but the Warriors pulled to within 19-18 before Cal State L.A. pulled away again. A Carter and Kelsey Molnar block, an ace by Carter, a kill by Lofrano and another ace by Carter made it 23-18. A kill by Sydney Kralj and a Lofrano ace ended the set.

The Golden Eagles led 12-6 in the third set and then fell behind 23-20 and 24-21 before a late rally ended the match. A block by Carter and Alcaraz made it 24-22, an attack error and a kill by Carter tied it at 24-24 and an attack error and a kill by Alcaraz ended the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a conference match at Chico State.
