LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team ended a tough week with a second straight difficult defeat.
One night after falling to defending California Collegiate Athletic Association champion Cal State San Bernardino in four sets, the Golden Eagles fell to vastly-improved Humboldt State in five sets, 25-19, 21-25, 16-25, 25-18, 15-7. Cal State L.A. (10-4, 8-3 CCAA) fell out of first place in the conference and reached the halfway point of the CCAA schedule in a tie for second with Cal State San Bernardino.
Humboldt State (10-4, 7-3 CCAA) posted its first-ever win in the Eagles Nest and snapped an 11-match losing streak to the Golden Eagles.
Iona Lofrano had 18 kills and 11 digs for Cal State L.A. and
Loreal Carter had 13 kills.
Kymberly Silveyra added 12 kills and a team-high 17 digs.
Ashley Owen had 15 kills to lead Humboldt State, while Symone Hayden had 14 kills and Kaitlyn Dunaway had 13 kills.
Humboldt State had a 59-53 advantage in kills, while Cal State L.A. hit at a .250 percentage to .240 for the Lumberjacks. The Golden Eagles had a 7-6 blocking edge. Humboldt State had the edge in serving with seven aces and nine errors to just four aces and 12 errors for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. held a 2-1 lead in sets after taking the second and third frames, but Humboldt State rallied from a 16-13 deficit in the fourth set and took the deciding fifth set.
The 'Jacks started well and took the opening set. The set was tied at 17-17 after kills by Silveyra and
JamieAnn Bero, but the 'Jacks scored the next two points to take the lead for good. A kill by Bero got the Golden Eagles to within 19-18, but Humboldt State scored six straight points to take control.
Cal State L.A. bounced back in the second set, opening up an 18-11 lead and holding off a late Humboldt State comeback. A service ace by Bero gave the Golden Eagles a 23-18 lead and a kill by Silveyra eventually closed out the set.
Cal State L.A. led for most of the third set and opened up leads as large as 20-12 to take a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles then put themselves in position to close out the match by taking a 16-13 lead in the fourth set following a kill by Lofrano and an attack error. Humboldt State, though, scored four straight points to grab the lead and scored the final four points of the set to send it to a fifth set.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early, 3-1, and never recovered. Humboldt State opened up an 8-4 advantage before a kill by Carter made it 8-5. Humboldt State, though, scored the next four points to open up a 12-5 lead and take control of the match.
Cal State L.A. will play its next two matches on the road, beginning with a contest at San Francisco State next Friday.
