LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team certainly had a weekend of extremes.
One night after a listless performance in a lopsided loss to San Francisco State, the Golden Eagles bounced back with a 78-39 victory over Sonoma State Saturday in the Eagles Nest.
Cal State L.A. (7-3, 4-2 CCAA) was coming off an 80-57 loss to the Gators on Friday, but the Golden Eagles came out firing on all cylinders on Saturday and beat Sonoma State in Los Angeles for the first time since January of 2006.
Alisha Belt finished with a game-high 14 points and nine rebounds, while Paige Melville had 12 points. Destinee La Fountain had nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Sonoma State (2-8, 1-5 CCAA) got 10 points and five rebounds from Hannah Sourek and six points and five rebounds from Kristina Fahey.
The Golden Eagles had outstanding balance on Saturday and 12 players scored in the game. Kaija Powell had eight points and five rebounds, Bree Parsons had eight points and Emily Tevez had seven points and six rebounds.
Cal State L.A. shot 45.2 percent for the game (33-of-73), including 54.3 percent (19-of-35) in the second half. Sonoma State didn't fare nearly as well, making only 20 percent of its shots for the game (11-of-55), including just 4-of-29 (13.8 percent) in the second half.
Cal State L.A. led by as many as 42 points in the contest.
The Golden Eagles shook off Friday's disappointing and opened Saturday's game with a 23-8 spurt to take early control. Cal State L.A. got back-to-back 3-pointers from Parsons during a 10-2 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 15-point lead nine minutes into the game.
Cal State L.A. got four points from Melville in the final minute of the first half to take a 38-20 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead early in the second half, scoring the first 11 points of the period to take a 51-20 lead.
The biggest lead came at 78-36 in the final minute following a layup by Olivia Sheehan.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday night with a CCAA game at Cal State Stanislaus.
