LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team put itself in position for a key California Collegiate Athletic Association home victory, but the Golden Eagles were unable to summon any late-game heroics.
The Golden Eagles were tied at 51-51 with five minutes to go, but Cal Poly Pomona scored the next seven points and went on to a 64-57 win Friday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-3, 6-3 CCAA) lost its third straight game, while Cal Poly Pomona (10-3, 8-1 CCAA) won its eighth straight contest.
James Tillman had a strong game for the Golden Eagles, scoring a game-high 18 points and collecting a game-high 11 rebounds. Quinton Watkins added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Davon Potts had 10 points.
DeRonn Scott led the Broncos with 17 points, while Jordan Faison had 15 points.
The teams had nearly identical stats except at the free-throw line, where Cal Poly Pomona was 16-of-28 and Cal State L.A. was 6-of-14. Cal State L.A. made 43.4 percent of its shots (23-of-53), while Cal Poly Pomona made 43.1 percent (22-of-51). Cal State L.A. was 5-of-20 from 3-point range, while Cal Poly Pomona was 4-of-10. The Golden Eagles had a 39-36 rebounding edge, but also committed 14 turnovers to just eight for the Broncos.
The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the game all thanks to Watkins, who hit a pair of free throws and made a 3-pointer. The Golden Eagles took their biggest lead of the game at 19-11 after a layup by Tillman, but endured a seven-minute scoring drought as Cal Poly Pomona went on a 15-0 run to take a 26-19 lead. The Broncos took their biggest lead of the game at 33-23, but a 3-pointer by Solomon Singer cut the deficit to 33-26 at halftime.
Cal State L.A. opened the second half well and baskets by Tillman, Duce Zaid and Watkins following a steal made it 33-32 with 17:30 to go. The Golden Eagles stayed within striking distance and finally took their first lead of the second half at 41-40 thanks to a Potts jumper with 10:40 to go. A basket by Xavier Jones boosted the lead to 43-40 and a jumper by Watkins gave the Golden Eagles a 45-43 lead with less than eight minutes to go.
A layup by Tillman gave the Golden Eagles a 47-45 lead and a layup by Zaid gave the Golden Eagles their final lead at 49-48 with 5:20 remaining.
After Jordan Finn hit a 3-pointer to put the Broncos ahead, Zaid tied it for a final time with a layup with 5:20 to go.
The Golden Eagles, though, didn't score for the next four minutes until a three-point play by Tillman made it 58-54 with 40 seconds to go. Joshua Munzon then appeared to have a steal from Scott, but Cal Poly Pomona maintained possession after a scramble on the floor ended up with the ball going out of bounds. The Golden Eagles were then forced to foul and the Broncos hit four free throws down the stretch to extend their lead. Potts hit a 3-pointer for the Golden Eagles' final points before a pair of free throws by the Broncos completed the scoring.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Humboldt State.
