LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team got its wakeup call in time to extend its match against Sonoma State on Saturday, but not in time to post a victory.
The Golden Eagles managed to rally and make things interesting, but the No. 16 Seawolves regrouped and posted a 25-17, 25-17, 16-25, 25-17 California Collegiate Athletic Association in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (7-5, 2-2 CCAA) dropped both matches this weekend after opening conference play with a pair of road victories.
Iona Lofrano had 18 kills and 11 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Bethanee Boggs had nine kills and hit at a .533 percentage. Kymberly Silveyra had eight kills and a team-high 19 digs.
Kelsey Hull had 16 kills to lead three Seawolves in double figures. Caylie Seitz had 15 kills and Madelyn Densberger had 13 kills and four blocks.
The match featured a rarity: the past two American Volleyball Coaches Association National Players of the Week were on opposing sides. Cal State L.A.'s Lofrano won the award last week and Sonoma State's Densberger won it two weeks ago.
Sonoma State had a 59-44 advantage in kills and hit at a .338 clip to .240 for the Golden Eagles. The Seawolves had a 7-6 edge in blocks. Both teams struggled at the serving line where Sonoma State had six aces and 13 service errors and Cal State L.A. had just one ace and 10 errors.
Cal State L.A. was unable to slow down the Seawolves in the first two sets and Sonoma State hit .467 in the first and .345 in the second.
The Golden Eagles finally got things going in the third set and recorded 15 kills and just one error for a hitting percentage of .583. The Golden Eagles opened up an 8-4 lead and rolled to a 14-7 behind the serving of Silveyra. A block by Lofrano and JamieAnn Bero gave the Golden Eagles their seven-point edge. A kill by Silveyra gave the Golden Eagles a 20-11 lead and they eventually closed out the set after a kill by Lofrano and a Sonoma State attack error.
Cal State L.A. was unable to sustain its momentum into the fourth set. Sonoma State took a quick 5-1 lead and led the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles pulled to within two points at 16-14, but couldn't get any closer.
Cal State L.A. will play three matches next week beginning with a match at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles will return home for matches against Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay next Friday and Saturday in the Eagles Nest.
