Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team made itself right at home in the opening round of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles, who earned the homecourt advantage for its matchup with Cal State East Bay thanks to results on the final day of conference play, raced to a 24-11 halftime lead and went on to a 67-53 victory on Tuesday in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (20-10), the No. 4 seed, led by as many as 25 points in the second half against No. 5 seed Cal State East Bay (16-11).
All four top seeds won on their homecourt on Tuesday, meaning the Golden Eagles will face No. 1 seed Chico State on Friday at noon in the Citzens Business Bank Arena in Ontario.
Tessondra Williams tied a CCAA Championship Tournament record with 29 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Kelli Lewis had 10 points.
Alyssa Hanson contributed seven points and seven rebounds, while
Maryum Jenkins tied a CCAA Tournament record with six steals.
Lauren Lucchesi and Brianna Terrance had 13 points each for the Pioneers.
Cal State L.A. earned the homecourt after Chico State earned the top seed and UC San Diego fell to No. 2 following a last-night loss to San Francisco State. The Golden Eagles were 1-1 against Chico State, while the Pioneers were 0-2. The Golden Eagles and Pioneers split game between each other during the regular-season and Cal State L.A.'s record vs. Chico State earned the Golden Eagles the tiebreaker over the Pioneers.
Cal State L.A. limited Cal State East Bay to just five first-half baskets and blanked the Pioneers for more than eight minutes while extending a 10-9 lead to 22-9.
The Golden Eagles shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52) against the nation's No. 2 scoring defense. Cal State East Bay entered the game allowing only 50 points per contest. Cal State L.A. was also 8-fo-21 from 3-point range, while Cal State East Bay was jjust 4-of-13. The Golden Eagles also had a significant edge in rebounding, 45-34.
Richelle Najera had nine rebounds to lead the way, while
Alisha Belt had eight.
The game was tied at 4-4 before Najera gave the Golden Eagles a lead with the basket and a 3-pointer by Lewis made it 9-4.
After Cal State East Bay pulled to within 10-9 with nine minutes left, the Golden Eagles scored the next 12 points as part of a 14-2 run to close the half. Williams started the surge by scoring eight straight points -- six on a pair of 3-pointers -- to make it 18-9.
Chiara DiMarco hit a free throw and then knocked down a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to 22-9. After Cal State East Bay finally broke its scoreless stretch with 43 seconds left in the half, Belt made a pair of free throws to make it 24-11 at halftime.
Hanson started the second half with a three-point play to stretch the lead to 27-11 and a Williams basket made it 29-12 and the Golden Eagles led by double-digit margins the rest of the way. A 3-pointer by Williams boosted the lead to 45-23 with 9:27 to go and a 3-pointer by Lewis gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 52-27, with 6:40 remaining.
