Box Score HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team saw its recent struggles stretch to a fourth straight game.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early and never could recover in a 60-47 loss to Cal State East Bay Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Pioneer Gym. Cal State L.A. (14-9, 9-7 CCAA) has now lost four straight games and slipped into a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference with Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State East Bay (11-9, 9-7 CCAA). The surging Pioneers recorded victories over Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. this week.
Chiara DiMarco had an outstanding offensive game for the Golden Eagles, pouring in a team-high 16 points in 21 minutes. She made 4-of-6 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range. She also hit all five free-throw attempts.
Maryum Jenkins had eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Tessondra Williams, the conference's leading scorer entering the week, was held to a season-low seven points by a tenacious Cal State East Bay defense.
Lauren Lucchesi had a game-high 17 points to lead three Pioneers in double figures. Brianna Terrance had 13 points and Micah Walker had 12 points.
Cal State L.A. shot just 37.5 percent (15-of-40), while Cal State East Bay hit 40 percent (18-of-45). The Golden Eagles were 5-of-13 from 3-point range, while Cal State East Bay was 7-of-19. Cal State East Bay had a 34-26 rebounding edge and forced 20 Cal State L.A. turnovers.
The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 22 points in the first half and were down, 37-17 at halftime. Cal State L.A. was able to slice a 22-point second-half deficit down to 14 points early in the second period, but never got closer than that until the final minute of play.
Cal State L.A. was down, 28-6, before a free throw by Williams, a three-point play by DiMarco and a layup by
Alyssa Hanson made it 28-12. The Golden Eagles then fell behind by 21 points before DiMarco hit a 3-pointer and then two free throws to slice it to 35-17. Cal State East Bay got the final basket of the half to make it 37-17.
After the Pioneers scored the opening basket of the second half, a layup by Williams, a basket by Hanson, a 3-pointer by Jenkins and a free throw by
Samantha Hansen sparked an 8-0 run that made it 39-25. A 3-pointer by Jenkins made it 43-28 with 11 minutes to go, but Cal State East Bay scored the next four points and led comfortably the rest of the way.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a home game against San Francisco State.
