Golden Eagles Complete Weekend With Defensive Win

Box Score HAYWARD -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team put the finishing touches on a successful first road weekend of California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

On a night where points were at a premium, the Golden Eagles had just enough offense to post a 51-47 victory over Cal State East Bay Saturday in Pioneer Gym. Cal State L.A. (5-1, 3-0 CCAA) was outstanding on defense and limited Cal State East Bay (4-5, 1-1 CCAA) to just 31.1 percent shooting.

Paige Melville had a game-high 19 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while Aiwekhoe Okungbowa added eight points. Destinee La Fountain had seven points and five rebounds, while Emily Tevez had seven points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 7:31 to go.

Stephanie Lopez had 14 points to lead Cal State East Bay, while Danielle Peacon had 11 points and Brianna Terrance had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Alisha Belt had five points and a team-high six rebounds, while Faith Fantroy had a team-high three assists and also added two assists.

Cal State L.A. shot 40.9 percent (18-of-44) and made just 3-of-14 from 3-point range. The Pioneers made just 19-of-61 attempts (31.1 percent) and missed all 14 of their 3-point tries. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-22 from the free-throw line, while the Pioneers were 9-of-17.

The Golden Eagles won despite being out-rebounded, 42-34, and committing 25 turnovers to just 15 for the Pioneers.

The game between two teams that faced each other in the first round of the CCAA Championship Tournament last year (won by Cal State L.A. in the Eagles Nest) was tightly-contested throughout with neither team building a lead larger than eight points.

The Golden Eagles managed a four-point lead in the first half, 22-18, following a 3-pointer by Melville. A layup by Okungbowa gave the Golden Eagles a 27-26 halftime lead.

Cal State L.A. opened up a 34-26 lead following a layup by Okungbowa with 15 minutes to play and had a 36-28 advantage after a basket by La Fountain with 12:30 remaining.

Cal State East Bay, though, went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 36-36. Tevez then hit a 3-pointer with 7:31 remaining to put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. A jumper by Melville boosted the lead to 45-42 with 2:17 to go and Tevez followed with two free throws to extend the lead to 47-42. A free throw by Belt and two free throws by Melville gave the Golden Eagles a 50-43 lead in the final minute. Cal State East Bay scored the next four points, but a free throw by Melville completed the victory.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 15, with a road game at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
