Box Score SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team got a career night
Quinton Watkins in a California Collegiate Athletic Association road win at Cal State Monterey Bay.
Watkins brought the Golden Eagles back from a nine-point, second-half deficit by scoring 25 of his career-high 30 points in the second half of an 81-73 victory over the Otters in the Kelp Bed. Cal State L.A. (4-1, 2-0 CCAA) got 13 consecutive points from Watkins to erase a 51-42 deficit. Watkins scored all 25 of his second-half points in the final 10:09 of the contest in a sensational shooting display.
After missing four of his first five field-goal attempts in the first half, Watkins was 8-of-10 in the second half and made all five of his 3-point attempts and all four of his free-throw tries.
Watkins led four Golden Eagles in double figures.
James Tillman also had an outstanding game, pouring in 21 points, including 16 in the first half to help the Golden Eagles build a 38-33 halftime lead.
Aaron Alston had a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double and
Duce Zaid had 12 points as well.
Ryan Nitz had 18 points to lead Cal State Monterey Bay (2-2, 0-1 CCAA). Alex Fertig and Devin Murphy had 12 points each.
Cal State L.A. shot 46.6 percent for the game (27-of-58), while Cal State Monterey Bay shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56). The Golden Eagles more effective from 3-point range, hitting 8-of-18 while Cal State Monterey Bay was just 4-of-17. The Golden Eagles were 19-of-23 from the free-throw line, while the Otters were 19-of-27.
Cal State L.A. had a 36-33 rebounding edge and committed 14 turnovers to 12 for the Otters.
The Golden Eagles built a 38-33 halftime lead behind Tillman's 16 points, but the Otters opened the second half with an 18-4 run to build their biggest lead of the game, 51-42, with 10:30 to go.
Watkins quickly erased all of that deficit and gave the Golden Eagles a lead they would not relinquish by personally scoring all 13 points in a 13-0 run that put the Golden Eagles ahead, 55-51. He hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the rally and then made consecutive layups to give the Golden Eagles a 52-51 lead. Another 3-pointer gave Cal State L.A. a 55-51 advantage.
The Otters cut the deficit to 55-53, but Watkins hit two free throws and Alston hit a jumper to boost the lead to six points. A 3-pointer by Watkins was followed by another basket by Alston to give the Golden Eagles a 66-58 lead. After the Otters got to within three points, 66-63, with 3:19 to go, Watkins hit another 3-pointer to get the lead back up to six points. He then added a layup to give the Golden Eagles a 71-63 lead. A Tillman jumper made it 73-65 with 1:23 to go and the Golden Eagles hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to complete the win.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a road game at Cal State East Bay.
