Box Score CARSON -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team lost the battle of the boards Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Cal State Dominguez Hills and wound up with its first conference loss of the season.
The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 31-11, while falling into a double-digit first-half deficit and they never recovered in a 77-53 loss to the Toros in the Torodome. Cal State L.A. (5-2, 3-1 CCAA) was forced to settle for a split with Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-2, 2-2 CCAA). The Golden Eagles won the first meeting in double overtime in the Eagles Nest last month.
Bree Parsons had 10 points for the Golden Eagles, while
Kaija Powell had seven points and four rebounds and
Paige Melville had seven points.
Tayler Champion had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead four Toros in double figures. Monay Lee had 15 points and 11 rebounds, Talia Rayford had 15 points and Amber Wharton had 12 points.
Cal State L.A. shot 41.7 percent for the game (20-of-48), 49-25 while Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 43.5 percent (30-of-69). The Golden Eagles knocked down four of their 11 attempts from 3-point range, while the Toros were 11-of-25.
The Toros ended up with a 49-25 rebounding edge. Cal State L.A. had 17 turnovers to 15 for the Toros.
The Golden Eagles used a 6-0 run to erase a 9-4 deficit early in the game. A layup by Melville, two free throws by
Destinee La Fountain and a basket by
Faith Fantroy gave Cal State L.A. a 10-9 advantage. A basket by
Alisha Belt tied the contest at 12-12, but the Toros scored the next eight points to take the lead for good.
A 3-pointer by
Tina Fantroy pulled the Golden Eagles to within 25-19, but the Toros responded with six straight points to restore the lead to 31-19. Baskets by
Michaela Reed and
Aiwekhoe Okungbowa made it 31-23, but the Toros scored the next five points to take a 36-23 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half with baskets by
Faith Fantroy and Okungbowa to make it 36-27, but the Toros used a 12-0 run to open up a 48-27 edge with 14:30 to go.
A 3-pointer by Parsons and a basket by
Olivia Sheehan pulled the Golden Eagles to within 57-43 with 9:39 to go, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home game against Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m.
