Golden Eagles End Season With Loss To Coyotes

Box Score SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team was looking for another big win to finish its 2013 season, but the Golden Eagles came up short.

One night after knocking off No. 12 UC San Diego, the Golden Eagles split the first two sets with California Collegiate Athletic Association champion Cal State San Bernardino before the Coyotes regrouped and posted a 25-20, 22-25, 25-17, 25-15 victory in Coussoulis Arena.

Cal State L.A. (16-14, 11-11 CCAA) wound up sixth in the conference, while the Coyotes (25-5, 21-1 CCAA) won their eighth consecutive conference title.

Kymberly Silveyra had 11 kills and 15 digs to lead a balanced Cal State L.A. attack. Bethanee Boggs also had 11 kills. Iona Lofrano had 10 kills and 12 digs and Loreal Carter had 10 kills.

Ashley Solis led Cal State San Bernardino with 12 kills and 14 digs, while Alexandra Torline had 11 kills. Danielle Newcomb and Brenna McIntosh had 10 kills each.

April Reyes had 22 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Alexandra Bura had 47 set assists.

Cal State San Bernardino had a 57-51 advantage in kills and outhit the Golden Eagles, .289 - .119. The Coyotes also led in blocks, 7-2.

The Golden Eagles fell behind quickly in the opening set, 17-8, but battled back and ultimately got to within 24-20 after a kill by Lauren Gomez. Solis, though, had a kill to finish the set.

The Golden Eagles rebounded nicely in the second set and jumped out to a 7-2 lead after a kill by Carter and a 12-6 lead after a Lofrano kill. The Coyotes got as close as one point late in the set, the final time at 23-22. Back-to-back kills by Lofrano and Silveyra evened the match.

Cal State L.A. had beaten Cal State San Bernardino in three sets in Cousoullis Arena last season and the Coyotes came out after the break determined not to lose two years in a row to the Golden Eagles. Cal State San Bernardino trailed only once in the third set, 2-1, and scored the next five points to take the lead for good.

Cal State L.A. started strongly in the fourth set in its bid to send the match to a fifth set. A kill by Boggs gave the Golden Eagles a 10-6 lead, but the Coyotes scored the next five points to take an 11-10 lead. A kill by Carter evened the set at 12-12, but the Coyotes won the next two points and began to pull away.

Cal State L.A. completed its 17th consecutive winning season.
