LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team found itself in a five-set struggle with Chico State for the second time this season, but this ending had a different ending.

Cal State L.A. (15-13, 10-10 CCAA) lost for the second time in three matches this week and slipped one game back of Chico State (14-13, 11-9 CCAA) in the conference standings.

The Golden Eagles took the opening set, 25-22, and looked poised to take a two-set lead after opening up a 20-12 lead in the second set. Chico State, though, had other ideas and stormed back to grab a set point at 24-23 following an ace by Shurtz. A kill by Lofrano evened it at 24-24 and a Chico State attack error kept it at 25-25. Kills by Shannon Boling and Quigley, though, evened the match.

Cal State L.A. played strongly in the third set and broke a 13-13 tie with kills from Lofrano and Carter. The Golden Eagles held just a 19-17 lead before kills by Lofrano and JamieAnn Bero, a ball-handling error, a kill by Silveyra, a service ace from Bethanee Boggs and a kill by Lofrano ended the set.

Chico State, though, forced a fifth set by taking the fourth frame, 25-17.

Chico State opened up a 9-3 lead in the fifth set and Cal State L.A. was unable to recover. The Golden Eagles got as close as 12-11 after two straight kills by Lofrano and 13-12 after another kill by Lofrano, but Chico State got kills from Quigley and Shurtz to end the match.

Cal State L.A. will play its final home game of the season on Friday, November 22 against UC San Diego.
