LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team put an end to its five-match losing streak with a solid all-around effort Friday night.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and survived a late challenge from Cal State Stanislaus in a 25-16, 25-18, 27-25 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (15-12, 10-9 CCAA) hit at an outstanding .315 clip in the three-set win.
Iona Lofrano led a balanced Cal State L.A. attack with 13 kills and eight digs. Bethanee Boggs had 11 kills and three blocks and hit at a .500 percentage. Loreal Carter had seven kills, three service aces and five blocks, while Kymberly Silveyra had seven kills, 10 digs and four blocks.
Blair Ehrlich had nine kills for Cal State Stanislaus (7-20, 4-15 CCAA), while Paige Walker had seven kills.
Cal State L.A. had a 42-35 advantage in kills and a 9-4 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles also had nine service aces, including three from Carter and two from JamieAnn Bero.
April Reyes, who returned to the lineup after missing five games with injury, had a match-high 20 digs in her return. Shea Hamilton and Alexandra Bura combined for 36 set assists.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 12-4 lead in the opening set and took control of the match from there. The Golden Eagles eventually got to set point at 24-13 following a kill by Boggs and, after the Warriors staved off three set points, a kill by Boggs ended the set.
Cal State L.A. surged to a 20-14 lead in the second set after a kill by Carter, took a 24-17 lead after a block by Boggs and Silveyra and clinched the set after an attack error.
The Golden Eagles moved out to leads of 14-8 and 18-14 in the third set before the Warriors rallied to take the lead at 24-22. A kill by Carter and an attack error tied things up and Cal State L.A. got its first match point after a kill by Silveyra. An attack error tied it again at 25-25, but kills by Carter and Bura ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will play its third home match of the week on Saturday with a contest against Chico State.
