LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team finally took full advantage of being at home.
The Golden Eagles started quickly and finished well and swept past Cal State East Bay, 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-6, 4-3 CCAA) won for the first time in four home matches.
Iona Lofrano led the way with 20 kills and a .375 hitting percentage, while Kymberly Silveyra had 14 kills and a .355 hitting percentage. Bethanee Boggs had six kills, two aces and three blocks.
Suzy Ni Xu had 12 kills in 15 swings for a .733 hitting percentage to lead the Pioneers (6-9, 2-5 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles hit at a solid .294 percentage and limited the Pioneers to a .172 percentage. Cal State L.A. had a 50-31 edge in kills and each team had seven blocks. The Golden Eagles were not effective at the serving line and had five aces with 11 service errors.
Alexandra Bura had 37 set assists, two kills and two blocks for the Golden Eagles and Molly Lyons provided some key serving at the end of the match to enable Cal State L.A. to close out the match in three sets.
The Golden Eagles opened up a 14-9 lead in the opening set after two kills by Lofrano and one by Boggs and three straight kills by Silveyra gave the Golden Eagles a 17-11 edge. The Golden Eagles got to set point at 24-17 after a kill by Lofrano and won the frame at 25-19 after a Cal State East Bay attack error.
The second set was tight throughout and was tied at 20-20 before kills by Silveyra and Lofrano gave the Golden Eagles a 22-20 edge. The Golden Eagles still held a 23-22 lead when a kill by Lauren Gomez got them to set point and a block by JamieAnn Bero ended the frame.
Cal State East Bay looked like it would send the match to a fourth set when the Pioneers opened up a 21-14 lead following an ace by Veronica Sanchez. The Golden Eagles sliced the deficit to 22-20 after an ace by Bura and a block by Boggs and Loreal Carter. Cal State East Bay took a 23-20 lead after a kill by Katie Allen, but a service error gave the serve back to Cal State L.A. trailing 23-21.
Lyons then came on to serve and saved the day for the Golden Eagles. A kill by Carter made it 23-22 and kills by Silveyra and Boggs got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-23. Lyons then put an end to the match with an ace, giving Cal State L.A. its first home victory.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday with a road match at Cal State Stanislaus.
