The Golden Eagles took the opening set, 25-22, after leading for most of the frame. The 'Jacks pulled to within 24-22, only to see a kill by Silveyra give the Golden Eagles the opening set.
The next three sets were lopsided. A kill by Lauren Gomez gave the Golden Eagles the second set, 25-14, a kill by Owen gave the 'Jacks the third set, 25-15 and a kill by Simone Hayden gave the 'Jacks the fourth set, 25-17, and evened the match.
Neither team led by more than two points in a tightly-contested fifth set. Humboldt State took a 6-4 lead after a bad set by the Golden Eagles and back-to-back kills by Lofrano later gave the Golden Eagles a 12-10 lead.
After a Humboldt State timeout, the 'Jacks scored the next two points on kills by Owen and Dunaway to tie it. Kills by Lofrano and Dunaway resulted in a final tie at 13-13. A kill by Carter got the Golden Eagles to match point and a Humboldt State attack error ended the contest.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a road match at Sonoma State.
