Golden Eagles Enjoy Home In Victory Over Broncos

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team gave the home crowd something to cheer about Friday night in the Eagles Nest.

The Golden Eagles, who have been perfect on the road in California Collegiate Athletic Association play but have struggled at home, picked up an entertaining 34-32, 25-17, 18-25, 25-15 victory over Cal Poly Pomona on Dig for a Cure Night.

Cal State L.A. (13-7, 8-4 CCAA) won for the fifth time in its last six matches and improved its home record to 2-4 with the victory. The Golden Eagles also completed a season sweep over Cal Poly Pomona (8-13, 6-7 CCAA).

Kymberly Silveyra had 18 kills and 21 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Iona Lofrano had 14 kills and 20 digs and Bethanee Boggs had 14 kills and six blocks.

Jessica Doerner had 13 kills and 14 digs for the Broncos, while Alexa Hasen had 11 kills and eight blocks.

Cal State L.A. had a 62-53 advantage in kills, while Cal Poly Pomona had a 10-9 edge in blocks. Cal State L.A. served better with six aces and five errors to Cal Poly Pomona's three aces and eight errors.

Alexandra Bura had 51 set assists for the Golden Eagles and five of the team's six service aces. Molly Lyons also had an ace.

The Golden Eagles hit at a .187 percentage to .146 for the Broncos.

The first set was the most dramatic of the night with both teams saving set points in an exciting back-and-forth. Cal Poly Pomona held a 24-22 lead before kills by JamieAnn Bero and Lofrano tied it up at 24-24. A kill by Lauren Jones made it 25-24 for the Broncos, but a kill by Silveyra tied it once again. After a Cal Poly Pomona attack error gave Cal State L.A. its first set point at 26-25, a kill by Hannah Harrer tied it again.

A kill by Boggs made it 27-26, but back-to-back kills by Doerner gave the Broncos another set point at 28-27. Kills by Lofrano and Boggs put the Golden Eagles back ahead, 29-28, only to have a kill by Doerner tie it again.

A kill by Boggs made it 30-29, but a kill by Lauren Jones tied it again. A kill by Silveyra made it 31-30, but a kill by Jones tied it again. Another kill by Jones tied it for the last time at 32-32 before a kill by Bura and a kill by Boggs finally gave the Golden Eagles the set.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set behind the serving of Bura and led the rest of the way. An ace by Lyons opened up an 18-12 lead and the Golden Eagles eventually rounded out the set on kills by Boggs and Lofrano.

The Broncos regrouped and took the third set, racing out to a 17-7 lead after back-to-back aces from Nicoletta Stork.

The fourth set was close early until a block by Bura and Boggs, a kill by Silveyra and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 12-6 lead. The Golden Eagles still led 20-15 before rattling off the final five points of the match on a service error by the Broncos, three straight aces from Bura and a kill by Loreal Carter.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Humboldt State beginning at 7 p.m.
