Golden Eagles Win Again On The Road, Beat Tritons

Box Score LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s volleyball team continued its unbeatable road show on Saturday, this time taking down a nationally-ranked opponent.

The Golden Eagles rallied from a fifth-set deficit and knocked off No. 10 UC San Diego, 25-21, 17-25, 25-22, 13-25, 22-20, at RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (12-7, 7-4 CCAA) improved to 6-0 in conference road matches in 2013. The Golden Eagles also finished the first half of the conference schedule with an outstanding performance that toppled UC San Diego (16-3, 8-3 CCAA).

The Golden Eagles came up big when it mattered the most, rallying from deficits of 9-4 and 12-8 in the fifth set and fighting off five match points, the final one at 18-19 thanks to a kill from Silveyra. That set the stage for Lofrano, who delivered back-to-back kills to give the Golden Eagles the win.

Kymberly Silveyra had a sensational match, recording a career-high 31 kills and hitting at a robust .338 percentage. She also had 19 digs. Iona Lofrano had another outstanding match as well, contributing 20 kills and 11 digs. JamieAnn Bero had 11 kills and five blocks.

Sophie Rowe had 20 kills to lead UC San Diego (16-3, 8-3 CCAA), while Danielle Dahle had 19 kills and Sara McCutcheon had 11 kills and seven blocks.

Alexandra Bura had 66 set assists, while April Reyes had 32 digs for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start and captured the first set. The frame was tied at 18-18 before a block from Bura and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-20 with a kill and then ended the set at 25-21 with another kill.

The Tritons evened the match by taking the second set, but Cal State L.A. regained the lead with another strong performance in the third set. The Golden Eagles opened up a 16-11 lead and, after UC San Diego closed to within 20-19, got a kill from Silveyra and an attack error to restore a three-point edge. A block by Bero and Bura got the Golden Eagles to set point and a kill by Silveyra gave the Golden Eagles the 2-1 lead.

UC San Diego easily won the fourth set and carried that momentum into the fifth set by jumping out to a 9-4 lead. The Golden Eagles, though, steadily chipped away and pulled to within 12-11 after a pair of kills by Silveyra. The Golden Eagles eventually tied it at 13-13 and staved off their first match point after a UC San Diego attack error. A Lofrano kill saved another one and tied it at 15-15. Loreal Carter delivered a kill to tie it again at 16-16 and another match point was averted on a service error. A block by Bero and Silveyra gave the Golden Eagles their first match point at 18-17, but UC San Diego scored the next two points to grab its final match point at 19-18. That's when Silveyra stepped up to tie it with a kill and Lofrano got the final two points on kills.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home match against Cal Poly Pomona on the Golden Eagles' "Dig for a Cure Night" to help in the fight against breast cancer.
