Golden Eagles Battle Back For Big Win At Chico State

CHICO – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team completed another enjoyable week of road matches in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.

The Golden Eagles rallied from a 2-1 deficit and outlasted Chico State, 16-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12 Friday night in Acker Gymnasium. Cal State L.A. (11-6, 6-3 CCAA) fought back to win its fifth straight conference road match.

Cal State L.A. started the week with a four-set win at Cal State Stanislaus on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles are now 4-3 in five-set matches this season.

Iona Lofrano led a balanced Cal State L.A. attack with 20 kills, 15 digs and a .321 hitting percentage. Kymberly Silveyra had 18 kills and nine digs, while Loreal Carter had 13 kills, including the one that ended the match. JamieAnn Bero added 10 kills and two blocks.

Chico State (7-8, 4-4 CCAA) got 18 kills from Lindsay Quigley, 17 kills from Ellie Larronde.and 14 kills and six solo blocks from Alex Shurtz.

Alexandra Bura had 55 set assists and two blocks, while April Reyes had a match-high 20 digs.

Cal State L.A. had a slim 64-62 edge in kills and hit at a .237 percentage to .255 for the Wildcats. The Wildcats had a 13-6 blocking advantage. The Golden Eagles had six service aces and 10 errors, while Chico State had five aces and seven errors.

The Golden Eagles were tied as late as 14-14 in the opening set, but Chico State went on an 11-2 run to close out the frame.

Cal State L.A. raced out to a 14-9 lead in the second set after consecutive blocks by Silveyra and Bethanee Boggs and led the rest of the way to even the match. A kill by Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-21 and a block by Carter and Boggs ended the set.

Chico State rebounded to take the third set after scoring the final six points to erase a 22-19 deficit.

The Golden Eagles sent the match to a decisive fifth set after scoring the final four points of the fourth frame to break a 21-21 tie. Kills by Silveyra, Bero and Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to set point and an attack error ended it.

Cal State L.A. then fell behind, 9-6, in the fifth set before fighting back for the win. The Golden Eagles took advantage of a service error and kills by Carter and Lofrano to tie it at 9-9. The set was 10-10 before a kill by Carter, an attack error and an ace by Lofrano made it 13-10. A kill by Silveyra got the Golden Eagles to match point at 14-11 and the Golden Eagles closed it out with a kill by Carter.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home match on Friday, Oct. 18, against first-place Cal State San Bernardino in the Eagles Nest.
