Golden Eagles Run Wild In 4-1 Win Over No. 3 Wildcats

Box Score CHICO – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team made sure it was a rough night all around for defending NCAA Division II West Region soccer champions.

After watching the Cal State L.A. men fall to Chico State in the opener of Friday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader, the Golden Eagle women exploded for four second-half goals and toppled No. 3 Chico State, 4-1, at University Soccer Stadium.

Cal State L.A. (2-0-1, 1-0 CCAA) saw its season end in the West Region championship match when Chico State (2-1, 0-1 CCAA) advanced on penalty kicks. That contest ended in a 0-0 tie, but the Golden Eagles were able to score plenty of goals on Friday.

The Golden Eagles had been ranked 13th in the NSCAA preseason poll, but fell out after a season-opening tie at Dixie State and a 2-0 win over Grand Canyon. Chico State was ranked No. 3 after opening with shutout wins over Western Washington and Dominican.

After a scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles got a go-ahead goal from Norie Pablo in the opening minute of the second half and went on to score four times in the first 26 minutes of the second half. The flurry came against a Chico State defense that had not allowed a goal in its first two contests of the season.

Each team managed only two shots in a tightly-contested first half and Cal State L.A. proceeded to score on four of its seven shots in the second period. Chico State finished the contest with a 13-9 edge in shots, but only two were on net. Gabriella Batmani made one save for the Golden Eagles, while Chico State goalkeeper Brianna Furner also made one save.

Pablo opened the scoring just 43 seconds into the second half when she knocked in a shot from about 15 yards out inside the near post. Megan Ollar picked up the first of her two assists on the play and Shereen Khoobbagha also had an assist.

Khoobbagha made it 2-0 less than five minutes later when she drilled a shot inside the far post from 20 yards out with assists going to Ollar and Heather Williams.

After Chico State got a goal in the 56th minute on a goal by Jennie Barto, the Golden Eagles put the contest out of reach with two more goals. Tera Piserchio got her first goal of the season with a blast from 25 yards out off an assist from Sydney Mullen and Tahne Apo picked up her first goal of the season and beating the goalie and tucking a shot inside the far post after an assist from Natalie Gabriel.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a conference game at Cal State Stanislaus.
