LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team has added a valuable member from a perennial high school power to its roster, head coach Stephen Thompson announced on Friday.
Joshua Munzon, a 6-foot-2 guard from Long Beach Poly, will be joining the Golden Eagles, Thompson said. Munzon was the team's Defensive Player of the Year and also earned first-team All-Moore League honors last season.
Munzon was part of a CIF 1AA championship team at Long Beach Poly as a junior and helped the team reach the CIF championship game this past season. He averaged 6.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
“Josh is a great addition to the Golden Eagle basketball family,” Thompson said. “Josh already possesses a relentless tenacity on defense that is innate and that I desire in all our student-athletes. I look forward to his continued development.”
Munzon also earned the Willie McGinest Scholar-Athlete award at Long Beach Poly.
Munzon is the fifth talented player to join the Cal State L.A. program. Earlier, the Golden Eagles announced the addition of University of Hawaii transfer
Trevor Wiseman, Cosumnes River forward
James Tillman, Riverside City College forward
Solomon Singer and El Camino College forward
Julian Camper.
Cal State L.A. is coming off one of its most successful seasons in years. The Golden Eagles were 17-10 overall and their 13-9 mark in conference play was their best since 2001. Cal State L.A. finished just three games out of first, the closest the Golden Eagles have been to the conference title since 2000. The Golden Eagles also reached the CCAA Championship Tournament for the third straight season.
