Golden Eagles Close Out Regular Season With Road Win

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team put a nice finishing touch on its regular-season with a road win at San Francisco State.
 
The Golden Eagles rallied for a 75-70 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over San Francisco State Friday in The Swamp. Cal State L.A. (17-9, 13-9 CCAA) finished in a fifth-place tie with Cal State San Bernardino and will have the No. 6 seed in the CCAA Championship Tournament.
 
The official announcement will come on Saturday, but it appears Cal State L.A. will be headed to Humboldt State for a first-round game in Arcata. The Golden Eagles and Jacks split regular-season games with each team winning on its homecourt.
 
Chris Robinson had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Golden Eagles past the Gators on Friday while Quinton Watkins had 21 points. Carl Hoffman had 17 points, while Jordan Richard had 13 rebounds and nine blocked shots.
 
Tyler Brown and James Albright had 14 points each to lead San Francisco State (9-19, 7-15 CCAA). Nefi Perdomo added nine points.

Cal State L.A. shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) and held San Francisco State to 39.1 percent shooting (27-of-69). The Golden Eagles were efficient from the free-throw line and made 18-of-23 tries (78.3 percent). The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 42-34 rebounding edge and won despite committing 23 turnovers to 14 for the Gators.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half before climbing back to within five points at halftime. A 3-pointer by Robinson got the Golden Eagles to within three points, 31-28, late in the first half before San Francisco State took the 33-28 edge at the break.

The Golden Eagles quickly wiped out the deficit thanks to consecutive 3-pointers from Watkins and the game stayed close to the finish. The Golden Eagles trailed, 62-61, but took the lead for good on a three-point play by Ryan Wetherell with 2:46 to play. Watkins followed with a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 67-62 lead.

The Gators countered with a 3-pointer, but a layup by Robinson pushed the lead back to four points, 69-65. Again, the Gators pulled to within two points, 69-67, but a basket by Leland Jones made it 71-67. Jones hit one free throw to make it 72-68 with 38 seconds to go and Watkins hit a pair of free throws to make it 74-70. Richard added a late free throw to account for the final scoring.
